An incident two weeks ago in a Juvenile hockey game between Ux- bridge and Pickering has led to two assault charges against one of the Pickering players. On November 26, Durham Regional Police charged 18 year old Rod Kammerer of Pickering Village with assault causing bodily harm and aggravated assault. The incident took place late in the second period during a game played at the Uxbridge Arena. Shawn Leonard, 18, who plays for Uxbridge became involved in a fight on the ice with another player. The pair was separated by the referees. Leonard was being held on the ice by the referees when the other Hockey player to face charges player started to skate away. The player then apparently turned quickly and kicked Leonard in the face. The young man was taken to Ux- bridge Hospital where doctors work- ed for two hours to close a gash under his chin. The cut required 40 stitches and had it been an inch or two lower, the skate blade might have severed the youth's wind-pipe. The young player spent more than a week recuperating from the injury. After the kicking incident, players from the Uxbridge bench stormed onto the ice and the game was call- ed at that point.
