26 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, December 3, 1983 Bubba, Poncho, Disco § lead Lakers to gol On the weekend of November 29 and December 1, the Remax/Scugog Lakers entered the Woodville Maroons Oldtimers tour- nament and played their first match against the Oakwood Old Oaks. They came away with a 6 to 3 vic- tory despite the absence of Steve (Darbano) Calder. At the end of the first, the score was tied 1 each and scoring for the Lakers was Mike Driscoll with assists going to Ken Smart and Carl Fitzgerald. The Lakers out-scored Oakwood in the second 3 to 1 on the strength of goals by Carl Fitzgerald assisted by Ken Smart and Mike Driscoll then Denzil Irving tallied twice with assists going to Ray Zaparaniuk and Bob Lee on the first and Ray again and Mike Creighton on Denny's second. The Lakers final two markers came in the third on goals by Jim (giveaway) Beatty from Mike Driscoll and Bubba McEachern and then Ken Smart from Ted Blanchard. The Lakers next outing was 8:00 a.m. on Saturday against Coboconk Devils and after a slow start the Lakers found the net halfway through the first when Ken Smart found the mark after being set up by his wingers Mike Driscoll and Carl Fitzgerald. The Lakers never look- ed back and went on to a 5-2 victory. Steve Calder whistled home a pass from Ray (Spinner) Zaparaniuk and Lop-sided scores in broomball loop fleet footed Gary Geer. Lakers next scored when Denny (Burt) Irving fired a low wrist shot after being put in the clear by Steve Calder and Bob (Poncho) Lee. Carl Fitzgerald got the fourth goal assisted by Ken Smart and Ted Blanchard and the last goal was by Spinner on a nice shot to the short side with assists to Steve Calder and Jim Beatty. Steve had a career high "3 point game but nobody cared and Pete Naumienko celebrating his bir- thday made routine saves on both the other 2 shots that didn't go in. The guys would like to thank Steve for having everybody back to his place for breakfast. The Lakers third outing was against the Cannington Oldtimers and with hard work and hustle Scugog won 5 to 0. Denzil Irving struck first with an assist awarded to Beatty. With the absence of Ken Smart, we were able to strength up the centre position by moving Fitzie to centre and he responded with three straight goals for a natural hat trick. Fitzies first came from the slot after the puck was dug out of the corner by hard work from Gary Geer and Bubba McEachern assisted as well. Fitz found the mark again when he put the puck under the crossbar - from a scramble in front of the net and assists were handed out to Disco Driscoll and Jim Beatty. Fitzie's third followed a steal of an errant Cannington pass at centre ice and with quick acceleration Fitz broke in free and scored on the glove side Mike Driscoll rounded out the scor- ing with the Lakers fifth goal when he finally was able to convert Gary Geer's 47th pass to him. Congratula- tions to Bubba, Poncho, Giveaway and nice guy Ted for getting Peter his shut-out. By virtue of the Remax/Scugog lakers three consecutive victories they earned a birth in the "'C"' divi- sional finals on Sunday afternoon and it was to be a re-match against the Cannington Club. The Lakers picked up where they left off on Sat. afternoon and jumped out front on a goal by Carl Fitzgerald after pin- point passes were made by Steve Calder and Burt Irving. Disco Driscoll scored next on a solo effort followed by two nice goals from fleet foot Geer which were assisted by Jim Beatty on the first and Ray Zap on Gary's second tally. The game ended 4 to 0 for the Lakers. Beatts asked that it be known he was our leading point get- ter on defence but Geer offered to show the rest of the forwards how to take a Beatty pass in the numbers at centre ice from our end zone and make a play marker out of Beatts. Peter Naumienko felt so bad about winning the gym bag for game M.V.P. he gave it away. Congratula- tions to the Lakers and thanks to the Woodville Maroons. OK, where's the defense? by D.
