24 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, December 3, 1985 Sports Strong third period snaps MoJacks slump by John B. McClelland After five consecutive losses, the Port Perry MoJacks finally put a couple of points into the win column with a come-from behind victory over the Port Hope Panthers at the Scugog Arena Sunday evening. But they did it the hard way Trailing 4-2 going into the final period, the MoJacks took charge of the game and skated away with an exciting 7-5 victory. It was an important win for the team, which has been down on its luck recently. The two points give MoJacks 11 for the season, one behind the Panthers and two ahead of the Lindsay Muskies. And probably more important, the victory should help restore some confidence among the players who have been pressing hard, getting a lot of bad bounces and wondering just what they had to do to get back on the winning track. Team captain Brian Nicholson led the way with a hat trick, and it looks like he may have rediscovered the scoring touch which deserted him in recent games. The line; of Nicholson, Jeff Johnstone and Andy Sutch played well all evening. With the MoJacks traihng 4-3 early in the third, Nicholson took passes from his hinesmates and rapped in the tying goal from in front of the Panther cage. And then at the 11:24 mark, as the MoJacks were killing a penalty, Nicholson grabbed a loose puck at his own blue line, swept down the left. wing and wound up for his patented slap shot. But with Panther goahe Guy Foster coming out to cut down the angle, Nicholson calmly held on to the puck, skated around him and flipped the disc into the wide open net Nicholson had a hand in the in- surance marker at 18:10 when he fired a shot at the net and Clay Dempsey was on the door-step to bang in the rebound Team Bowmanville Eagles Cobourg Cougars Lakefield Chiefs Uxbridge Bruins Port Hope Panthers Port Perry MoJacks Lindsay Muskies Little Britain Merchants JUNIOR CC STANDINGS (as of December 2, 1985) G.P. As the Panthers pulled their goalie for an extra attacker, Rob Nicholson put the game on ice as he chased a long pass from Paul But- terworth deep in the Port Hope zone and easily scored to make the final 7-5. Panthers took a 1-0 lead at 9:43 of the first as Shawn Shalla scored off a scramble. The MoJacks evened the game at 1-1 three minutes later when Brian Hendricks, playing his first game in a MoJack uniform, rifled a slap shot from 40 feet out. Less than a minute later, the Pan- thers went ahead 2-1 as Kelly Dun- ford hit with a good shot to the corner. Then the MoJacks coughed up the puck behind their net at 16:28 and it led to a goal by Dale Austin for a 3-1 lead. At 18:44, Nicholson got his first of the game on a nice three way pass- ing play Johnstone and Sutch. Nicholson finished off the effort with a back-hand from in front of Guy Foster. The teams went through a scoreless second period, and with the puck taking all kinds of 'bad bounces' for the MoJacks it looked like the slump was going to continue. But with just over three minutes gone in the third, the line of Paul Butterworth, Jeff Duncan and Chris Nicholson went to work with Nicholson making some nice moves to get the puck over the blue line, then fed a perfect goal-mouth pass to Butterworth who tipped it in. That made it 4-3 and seemed to give Mo- Jacks the spark they needed to stage the come-back. The line of Butterworth, Nicholson and Duncan turned in a fine game, skating well and working hard on fore-checking, which resulted in several good scoring | | | | | Port Pee Wees nip Lindsay 5-4 by Chris Legere On Friday November 29 the Port Perry lLegionaires hosted Lindsay and defeated them 54 1n a hard fought game Port got off to a slow start and this resulted in Port being down 2-0 before Sean Bradbury fired a wrist shot to the top corner and put Port on the scoreboard The assist going to Steve Stamiland Then in the second period from Jarett Harman and Graham Sullivan, Sean scored his second of 4 goals to ie the game at 2 each Only 5 minutes later Sean scored again, assisted by Graham Sullivan to give Port the go ahead goal Three minutes later Jarett Harman. on a creative passing play from Sean Bradbury and Graham Sulhiven, scored Port's 4th goal of the game With 25 seconds left in the second period Lindsay scored to decrease Port's lead to one goal before the intermission Four minutes into the 3rd period Lindsay scored to tie the game at 4 goals each Then on a power play Sean Bradbury assisted by Danny Sluggett and Jan Heyes scored the game winner for Port The final score again was Port Perry 5. Brian Hendricks clicked for the first goal on a great shot, while on the blue line, Steve Sawyer pro- ved to be a hard-nosed customer who likes the heavy hitting. MoJacks out-shot the visitors 36-31, but Ken Harman had the tougher chances and his fine play was a major factor in the win. Our goalie, Stacey Ballingall, should be commended on his fine ef- fort between the pipes as he made many key saves to earn a well deserved shut out With only 1:44 left to play. Jeff Oke found the marker to make the score 3-0, assisted by Mike Sorley We were all ready to go to Pickering Village and wipe the pants off of them but Pickering Village had another idea It's funny how things can go from great tu, awful but that's what hap- pened, as Port was defeated 6-4 after having a 3-1 lead in Pickering We were glad to see Shawn Nanay and Jamie Menzies back in our line up after missing the game against Cobourg Port was up by one in no time at all on a goal from Brad Menzies assisted by Greg Stapleton and War- ren Geer It was just four minutes of the league. Game time is 7:30 P.M. SHARP-SHOOTER: The MoJacks should keep an eye on young Jarrett Harman. He won the Scoro competi- tion with a perfectly placed shot at the end of the second period. Lucky? The youngster turned the same feat two weeks earlier. Both times he was shooting for other ticket holders to split the prize money. Jarrett is the younger brother of MoJack net- minder Ken Harman. time he got some help from his mates as the Mo- Jacks won their first in six starts. They came from behind in the third period to defeat the Port Hope Panther 7-5. (See story) later when Brad Traves gave a pass to Jeff Oke who in turn passed to Mark Barkey which resulted in a goal. The first period had ended and we were quickly into the second, but Pickering had scored making it 2-1 Fighting back was the duo of War- ren Geer and Clair Cornish, as Clair fed Warren and he made no mistake making it 3-1 Pickering got two quick goals tying the game at three Clair Cornish popped one in assisted by Warren Geer and Andrew Steele The next three goals were by Pickering and they called the game with seven minutes left to play Just when we were planning our comeback, they called the game' Oh well, maybe next time' Our next game 1s this Wednesday when we meet the visiting team from Peter- borough See you there' FORT PEARY STAR. | ; 3 7 | 2 ATES I SARE ML
