Rev Van Evk told the Star he's pleased to be com: ing home to Canada after an absence of nine years Prior to his four years as a pastor in California. he spent five years in the community of Whitinsville, Mass . a town of about 11,000 people "I've been waiting for the oppor- tumity to come back to Canada It was just a matter of waiting for the right call," he said. And while the 75 families at the Hope Church 1s much smaller than his most recent post in California where he had 170 families in his church, Rev. Van Eyk said moving to a small community like Port Perry suits him just fine. It will be a good place to raise his young family of three girls and a boy, whose ages range from four to 11 years. And the fact that the Hope Church is smaller means a "better sense of togetherness," he stated. People are more likely to be involv- ed in all aspects of Church life, rather than just attending service once a week. Born and raised in Montreal, Rev. Van Eyk took his B.A. degree at Calvin College in Michigan and then a Master of Divinity at the Calvin Seminary. At one time he seriously con- templated a career as chaplain in the Canadian Navy, and spent a period stationed with the Navy in Halifax. But for a variety of reasons, this was not for him and he left the Navy to work as a church pastor. 1 felt this was a better way for me to serve the Lord," he said. Moving from the City of Modesto, which has a population of 120,000 people and is 70 miles east of San Francisco, to the small town of Port Perry, will require a certain amount of readjustment for himself, his wife Ruth and their children. Not the least of which will be get- ting ready for a Canadian winter. Winters in Modesto were damp and foggy. the summers long and hot with temperatures often hitting 100 degrees I. His wife and children took a flight east from California, while Rev. Van Eyk drove the family van and ran into several blizzards en route. After the interview with the Star last Friday afternoon, he was off to buy a set of snow tires Rev. Van Eyk and his family will be living in Port Perry in a home on Rosa Street recently purchased by the Hope Church.
