aa 22 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, November 19, 1985 Port Novice A's go right down to the wire On Saturday the team travelled to Ennismore for a 2 day tournament In the first game the Pearce Auc: tioneers faced off again the season- ed Port Hope team. Although they had been defeated by Port Hope in league play, the Novice No.1's came out with a 4-1 win. The scoreboard was blank for a period and a half due to the superb effort of Port's goaltender, Mike Pashley, as well as a great team defensive effort by Clay Scott, Keith Haist, Scott Heasman, Andrew Jones, Jay King and Gavin Carnegie. Midway thru the second period, Chad Kearns scored assisted by Brent Harper and Davey Bourgeois to take the lead 1-0. But less than a minute later Port Hope answered back with their lone goal of the game. Early in the third period, Brett Lawson netted Port's go ahead goal with the assist going to fellow linesmen Davey Bourgeois. Port clinched the lead on a breakaway goal by wingman Davey Bourgeois. Later on in the period, Port scored another reassurer as Chad Kearns tucked in goal number 4 Great playing boys Mike Pashley was awarded the MVP for this game for his great goaltending ef- forts. November 8 the Malmont Farms Atoms hosted Uxbridge and again skated in a strong 6-3 victory. Scor- ing for the Green Machine was Jody logan with two goals; Jason Cochrane with two goals. Good game Kent Then, it was on to the champion- ship against Pickering. After an arousing pep talk by coach Spencley the boys came out all fired up. This was anybody's game as the teams were equally matched. Port opened the scoring midway through the 1st period on a blistering shot by Davey Bourgeois with Scott Heasman get- ting the assist. This lead was short lived as Pickering retaliated tying the score at the end of the 1st period. The 2nd period remained scoreless but saw both teams get- ting many scoring chances. Mike Pashley was hot between the pipes making many unbelievable saves. Midway through the 3rd period Pickering took the lead but Port's Greg Thompson made that short liv- ed as he connected on a beautiful pass off the stick of Brent Harper 30 seconds later. The game ended in a 2 all tie for regulation time. The game moved into overtime and for the 1st 2 minutes both teams Quick start for the Atoms Cochrane with one goal. In the first four games the Mal- mont Farms Atoms have shown that they are the champions of last year and again are going to be a tough club to beat this year. The M.V.P. for the final game was No.8 Scott Heasman, way to go Scotty. Port's Davey Bourgeois and Brent Harper played exceptionally well throughout the entire tournament. During the overtime period there was a 45 minute delay when a Pickering player was injured after a collision with his own teammate. After a very lengthy wait for the am- bulance the game continued but not with the enthusiasm felt before this unfortunate accident. We all now realize how important and necessary it 1s to have medical per- sonel on stand-by during the spor- ting events. Our thoughts and wishes are with you Mike Bury for a speedy recovery. The Pearce Auctioneers will be practicing hard this week as they are off to Waterford Saturday for another 2 day tournament. You are all playing great, boys. On Friday, November 15th, the Novice No.1's hosted the Pickering Village team. Port Perry trounced the opposition 10-0. Whitby scored first but it only took us one minute to get the goal back on a pass from John Lally to set up Derek Fitzgerald in front of the net. Whitby then retaliated with four quick unanswered goals before we could get our second which John Lally scored with assists going to Derek Fitzgerald and Darren Cau- dle.
