McClelland The Port Perry MoJacks had to reach down very, very deep to come up with two gusty performances over the weekend for a tie and a vic- tory in Junior C hockey action. But the MoJacks players themselves decided the game should go ahead **because Vaughan would have wanted it that way." Mr. Parliament described a team meeting prior to the game as very emotional. The MoJacks donned black arm bands, which they will wear for the remainder of this season, and there was a moment's silence in Vaughan's memory prior to the face-off. On Sunday night at the Scugog Arena, both teams observ- ed another moment's silence as well. Mr. Parliament said that Vaughan's hockey jersey will not be worn by anybody else this season, and he suggested that the team may retire sweater number four permanently. In the game against Uxbridge, the MoJacks spotted the Bruins an ear- ly two goal lead before captain Brian Nicholson clicked on a power play late in the period. James Myette and Nicholson with his second gave the team a 3-2 margin in the second, and defenseman Rob Nicholson upped it to 4-2 midway through the final frame. However, the Bruins came back with a pair of goals late in the period by Cliff Freckleton and Paul MacEwan to get the tie. THE MERCHANTS On Saturday night at the Scugog Arena. the MoJacks met the tough and hungry Merchants who had not won a game in two previous starts this vear Under difficult circumstances. the MoJacks put together a very gritty effort for a well deserved 6-4 vic- tory Port Perry carried the play for most of the game firing 41 shots at Merchant net-minder Rob Lightle Were it not for his fine work in the net. the score might have been a lot higher The Merchants hit the score board first early in the opening period when Roddy Jukes banged in a re- bound off the back-boards And ear- Iv in the second, the visitors went ahead 2-0 on a breakaway short: handed marker by Dan Webster who beat Paul Goreski in the Mo- Jack cage At the 12:15 of the middle period, Andy Sutch broke Lightle's shut-out bid as he flipped a shot through traf- fic that found the top part of the net. The Merchants ran into penalty problems and at 14:05 Brian Nicholson knotted the score at two each as he faked a shot from the left point area and then moved around Lightle who had come out to cut the angle. Nicholson simply slid the puck into an empty cage. Thirty-five seconds later, Paul Butterworth gave the MoJacks the lead for the first time. He had been knocked down in front of the crease and while lying flat on the ice, he just poked a loose puck across the line. Nicholson was right on the Mer- chant door-step at 17:14 to hammer in a rebound for 4 4-2 lead with brother Chris picking up an assist. But the Merchants made it 4-3 in the final minute when Sam Thorn- bury seemed to deflect a shot along the ice. In the third period, the Merchants again took advantage of a rebound off the back-boards as Clint Adams beat Goreski at 11:42 to square the match at four. With just over five minutes left, captain Brian Nicholson pulled the trigger with a quick shot from the face-off circle for what proved to be the winner. Brother Chris and Myette drew the assists. The MoJacks were killing a penal- ty in the final minute when Jeff McColl pounced on a loose puck deep in his own end and fired it the length of the ice into an empty Mer- chant net. That gave the MoJacks a two goal bulge and ensured the victory. This was a tough, hard-fought game with both teams sticking pret- ty much to hockey The Merchants took 17 mirors, while the MoJacks - were hit for just 11. It was a solid team win and the MoJacks got some fine work from Dean Smith. Chris Nicholson, Jon Campbell. Andy Sutch, and Rob Sedore Jeff Duncan played with a lot of intensity and may have had his finest game in a MoJack uniform. Brad Treaves, up from the minor ranks for this match, turned in a de- cent performance along the blue line Brian Nicholson's five goal weekend pushes his total to 14 in tour games He also had a couple of goal-posts against the Merchants The MoJacks are idle until this coming Sunday when the Uxbridge Bruins pay a visit to the Scugog Arena with face off at 7:30 P M Legionaires win 7-1 by Chris Legere On Friday.
