Hockey "stars" of Of the close to 450 youngsters in the Port Perry Minor Hockey program, the youngest are the Tykes who take to the ice each Saturday morning for in- struction from Barry Oke and his seven assistants. Ranging in age from four to eight years, the Tykes are divided into two groups according to ability. Skating skills are stressed in the first year and as the youngsters progress, more emphasis is placed on hockey skills. the future take to the ice....ooops! Mr. Oke says there are five specific instruction cycles used throughout the season. Only at the end of the season are "mini-games" played using half the ice surface. This year to date, there are 67 in the Tyke program, and 30 of them are skating for the first time. Mr. Oke is in his third year as coach for the Tykes.
