S Cudde Township Clerk & Returning Otter Port Perry Ontario 985 7346 181 Perry St Selected as a youth delegate Kendall will throw his support behind Sixteen year old Mark Kendall 1s about to step into the high powered politics of a provincial leadership convention The grade 10 student at Port Perry High School has been selected as a youth delegate to the Provincial Conservative convention at the end of November in Toronto. Mark told the Star last week that already the pressure is starting to build with leadership supporters making phone calls and sending pamphlets in the mail. But he's made up his mind to throw his vote in the direction of former treasurer Larry Grossman, the man who placed a close second last winter to Frank Miller when the Tories went through the same exercise. . "I thought he (Grossman) did a good job as treasurer and I like his sense of humour. I think he looks like the right kind of guy for the Par- ty," Mark said when asked why he will be voting for Grossman. He added that he has not met or heard Allan Pope who's in the hunt for the top spot, but he did meet Dennis Timbrell last year, and in Mark's words "I was not impressed." The leadership is expected to be a Timbrell-Grossman battle all the way. Mark expects that his three days at a hotel in Toronto attending the convention will be a bit of an eye- opener and he's bracing himself for what could be some heavy duty pressure as candidates supporters (jregony ¢ SWEATERS SWEATERS SWEATERS try to muster all the votes they can for their favourite But he also believes attending this convention will be a great learning experience for him, a chance to witness first-hand the inner work- ings of a party selecting a provincial leader. Mark already has an interest in politics. He's been a Young P.C. member for the past four years and says he thoroughly enjoys politics. He beat out a political science stu- dent from Trent Umversity to become one of the two youth delegates at the meeting in Ux- bridge two weeks ago. had to give a speech, and lined up some support from senior delegates at the meeting. While he is hoping that Grossman gets the support from the Party to become the new leader, Mark predicts that this convention may be lower key, without as much hoopla as the previous one last winter. He also predicts it may not go further than the first ballot. Because he is a youth delegate, the Party is picking up his hotel, meal and registration expenses. This will be his first convention and Mark doesn't deny the fact that some of the lessons he learns will be put to use at a later date when he takes a stab at active politics himself. "Some time in my life, I'll run for office, but at this time, I don't know where," he shrugs. Before that, he hopes to take a degree in political science at the University of Toronto. Mark is taking the whole process seriously, but he chuckles at the fact that his support for Grossman is making life a little more interesting around the Kendall household in Utica. His mother, Doreen, is a strong supporter of Dennis Timbrell.
