Craig Thomson of Oshawa was driving a 1985 GMC van southbound on Regional Road 7 when he attemp- ted to pass a vehicle in front of him, discovered an oncoming car and pulled back into his lane. Police say he overcompensated, however, and caught the shoulder, slipped, and rolled into the east ditch. The driver sustained minimal injuries. The van wasn't so lucky with $10,000 damage. SLEEPY DRIVER Royden Collins, 21. of Port Perry was headed north on Simcoe Street South in Prince Albert when the pick-up he was driving hit the right shoulder of the road and slid into a hydro pole. Yes. it 1s a huge thermometer made by Jim Gerrow and put in place by Jim and Nick: Henshaw. It can be clearly seen from the road but is not to in- dicate the winter weather. Instead, it shows the progress and growth of the Building Fund which is not too far up yet to allow a beginning. It was hoped some exterior work could have been started so that local men could devote spare winter time on the interior. We understand the land separation is almost complete to allow for a western approach and parking. Bonnie Gerrow gladly ac- cepts donations towards the Building Fund. It's to be hoped Jim may soon have to climb a ladder with his paint brush to mark the red line. Sunday morning when we entered the Scugog United, it was easy to see Madeline Cawker and other women had been using their artistic abilities with a generous supply of autumn produce to create a decorative Thanksgiving atmosphere Although some of the families were away for the hohday, we welcomed others from a distance including close relatives of Karen Davis who had come from Ottawa. We are always pleased to have Rev Tansley return to us too. Next Sunday, at 11 a.m is another special day when Manchester also comes to the Island United to help celebrate the Annual Anniversary and hear Rev. Peter McKellar, the Executive Secretary for the Bay of Quinte Conference, thus getting us better acquainted with the work and place ot Conference for the district churches. A social time and lunch will follow the Service. Now for the events of the week The Women's Institute will meet Wed. evening at the Community Hall October 16. The program will be a French theme. Choir practice for the Island United this Thursday will be at 8 p.m. instead of 7:30 so more men can make it.
