22 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, October 8, 1985 Sports "A lot of goal-scoring power out there," says coach Bob Marquis MolJacks set for another Jr.season The Port Perry MoJacks wrap up their training camp this week and will take to the ice for the real thing on Thursday night as they open the Central Junior C schedule with a game against the Panthers in Port Hope. MoJack head coach Bob Marquis had the tough, but enviable task recently, of making some difficult cuts to trim the roster in time for the league opener. Last Sunday night at the Scugog Arena, the MoJacks looked pretty sharp as they handed the Lindsay Muskies a 9-5 defeat in an exhibition contest. Three nights carlier, the team took a 54 loss at the hands of the Little Britain Merchants. Following Sunday's victory, coach Marquis told the Star he likes what he sees on the ice, and he's confident the team will be a con- tender in the Junior C loop this sea on **1 think we're going to have a real fine team. There is a lot of goal scor- ing power out there, especially from the guys on the first line," he said. Those guys on that first line are Brian Nicholson, last year's league scoring champ and MVP on the left wing; right winger Jeff Johnstone, a veteran Junior player in a MoJack uniform who is tough in the corners and along the boards; and Bowling scores MONDAY NIGHT LADIES 7:00 BOWLING Team Standings: Goofy - 22; Pluto - 17; Minnie Mouse - 16; Bambi - 12; Mickey Mouse - 11, Donald Duck - 6. Ken Stauffer 623 newcomer Jamie Myette at centre. Myette has a wealth of Junior C experience with the old Rice Lake team, Lindsay and Little Britain. He's a proven goal scorer, a nifty puck handler and coach Marquis says he 'has a great attitude." Myette recently moved to the Port Perry area and team officials were pleasantly surprised when he show- ed up at training camp. Brian Nicholson was the scoring spark-plug for the MoJacks last season with 48 goals and 38 assists in 28 games. He'll be seeing a lot of ice time this year taking his regular shifts and playing the point on power plays. He was probably the hardest shot in the Junior C loop. Also up front on the forward lines, the MoJacks are expecting some goal scoring punch from veterans Brad Flaxman and Paul Butter- worth, a speedy skater who likes the rough going. Other players from last years squad will include Jeff Butter- worth, Jeff Duncan and Dean Smith. Mark Goreski of Port Perry has cracked the line-up along with Chris Nicholson, Brian's younger brother. And coach Marquis has been im- pressed with two newcomers from the Pontypool area: Andy Souch and Rod Armstrong who are proving to be tough customers in the corners. DEFENSE Along the blue line, the MoJacks will have a blend of talented veterans and rookies. Oshawa native Jeff McColl is back in the green and gold, much to the delight of team officials. He joined the club midway through the season last year and is one of the smoothest skaters on the squad. He is also one of the hardest hitters. Rob Nicholson will see a lot of du- ty on defense. He handles the puck well and is capable of straightening up any opposition forward with a body check. Vaughan McKee, bothered by in- juries during the 1984-85 season is back with the MoJacks and the team will be counting on his size and strength. Rob Sedore will also play defense in his sophomore year. The ex- perience he gained last season should prove helpful and he's look- ed steady in the exhibition games. Two newcomers on the blue line are John Campbell of Oshawa and Clay Dempsey from Greenbank who played his minor hockey in Port Perry. Campbell is a tall, lanky youngster with good speed and range. Dempsey also has good range and plays a hard-nosed "'stay- at-home' style on defense. In goal, the MoJacks will be coun- ting heavily on Ken Harman who seems to thrive on plenty of work. Harman's a veteran in the league with the MoJacks. He'll be backed up by Paul Goreski of Port Perry who looked very sharp in the 9-5 win over Lindsay Sunday night when he played the final half of the game. With the regular schedule just around the corner, coach Marquis is hoping his team gets off to a quick start with a string of several vic- tories. Last year, the team got off to a poor start with nine losses in the first 13 games before turning things around en route to a third place finish. He is cautiously optimistic the team can finish in the top three again this season, but he agrees with most league observers that the Bowmanville Eagles will be the team to beat. He said as well that Little Britain Merchants appear to have a strong club again this year. The MoJacks will be in Port Hope this Thursday evening for their first game, and their next match will be Friday, October 18 when they visit Lakefield to take on the Chiefs. The first home game at the Scugog Arena will be Sunday, Oc- tober 20, when the Lindsay Muskies pay a visit. Teams will play a 28 game schedule this year with all clubs making the first round of playoffs. Like last year, the top four finishers will select who they meet from the teams who finish in the bottom four spots. No contact Hockey League Crandells Riverboat and Laroc- que Electric battled to a 4-4 draw. Crandell's Ken Jeffrey and Doug Bache scored early in this contest, only to see Larocque come back with 4 straight goals, 2 by Bill Hurst and 1 each by Ritchie LeFort and 1 Randy Logan. Crandells made it 4-3 halfway through the third period on a goal by Sandy Garvock. With :43 seconds left on the clock, Dave Mann scored the equalizer. Game Two Smith Contracting handed Sport- sland its third straight defeat by a 5-2 mauling. This game seesawed the first 2 periods on goals by Mike Driscoll and Bob Lee for Smiths. Bill VanCamp and Ron Zaparaniuk scored for Sportsland. The third period was all Smiths. As Bruce Smith, Keijo Kinnunen and Al Bon- ner scored three unanswered goals. Game Three J&D Carpenter's won their third straight game 4-2 over Compton Cable T.V. The Carpenters held sole possession of first place on goals by Terry Rose, Wayne Fox, Dennis Lycett and Dan Horner. Scoring Compton's goals were Dave Bourgeois and Ron Compton. Game Four The defensive game of the day was played by Galley Fish and Chips and B.J. Donuts with Galley skating away with a 2-1 victory. Scoring for Galley, Dick Martin and Glen Howsam. B.J 's lone goal by Steve Calder.
