Day Weekend, ten year old Christy Luke watched the Muscular Dystrophy Telethon on TV, and decided that she would like to do something to raise money for children. Christy herself suffers from a rare form of MD known as Charcot- Marie-Tooth, or CMT, but she knows that some people with MD are in more serious condition than she is. So the young Port Perry girl, on her own, approached Barry Town- send and asked if she could put a money jar on the counter of Barry's Variety on Water Street. He said "sure," and in the two weeks the jar has been on the counter, the response has been fantastic. The money jar has a photo of Christy on it, and a lot of people recognize her as a local girl. Her friends from school gather pop bot- tles and contribute the change to this cause. The jar will remain at the Varie- ty Store for the next few weeks, and Christy's Mom, Sharon, stressed that all funds will be turned over directly to the Muscular Dystrophy Association in Ontario, to be used for research and to help pay for such things as walkers, wheel chairs, special boots and braces for people who suffer from the disease. "Christy doesn't really talk very much about her own condition, but one thing she likes to do is help others who are less fortunate than herself," said Mrs. Luke last week. Christy was first diagnosed with CMT three years ago. It affects the nerves and muscles in the feet, lower legs and hands. Unlike some forms of MD, it is not a killer, but quite often it becomes a crippler. Christy now has trouble walking and must use crutches or a wheel chair. She's slated for hip surgery in December and next year will have more surgery to repair the arches of her feet. Mrs. Luke says there may be on- ly 200 or so people in Canada suffer- ing from the CMT form of MD. Families of those with CMT have formed an association which relies on outside donations. One of the pro- jects is to set up a scholarship fund for people who have CMT. Christy is just delighted that her friend Barry agreed to put the money jar on the counter in his store, and she's very grateful to all the customers who have made a contribution She knows that every penny col- lected will be used for a good cause Kiddies spook party The Dut ham Region Family YM CA has planned a Halloween Party for pre-schoolers Children are in vited to come dressed in costumes There will be crafts. games, treats. movies and a costume parade' A safe Halloween environment is lots of fun especially for younger members of the family Join the fun on Saturday. Building boom now $2 million over '84 The value of building permits in Scugog Township is running more than $2 million higher for the first eight months of this year, com- pared with the same period in 1984. A report tabled at Monday's council meeting shows Scugog has issued permits worth $9,306,000 up to the end of August. The figure for the same period last year was just over $7 million. | There have been 93 permits for single family homes, worth $7.2 million so far this year. To the end of August in 1984, there had been 75 single family home permits issued. There has also been $554,000 worth of agricultural permits issued this year, more than double the total for eight months last year. However, the value of industrial and commercial permits has drop- ped sharply to date this year, from $597,000 last year to $225,000 in In 1984, construction activity in the Township began to taper off sharply in the month of August with just $470,000 worth of permits issued. This year, the activity has remained strong as the Township issued just under $1 million in permits last month, including 12 for Fire Department holds Open House on Oct. 6 Fire Prevention Week is coming up October 6 to 12, and to mark the occasion, the Scugog Volunteer Fire Department will be holding the Open House at Hall 1 in Port Perry. The Open House will be on Oc- tober 6 from 1:00 to 6:00 in the after- noon. The public is more than welcome to drop by the Fire Hall at Clark and Crandell Streets in Port Perry; enjoy coffee, pop and donuts, view the many demonstrations, or just have a chat with the volunteer firefighters in attendance. Correction A news items on page 17 of the September 24 edition of the Port Perry Star stated that an Oshawa man was arrested September 22 for a dangerous driving and dangerous weapon charge at Goreski's cam- pground on Scugog Island. That is not correct. The alleged of- fenses in fact took place at Platten Island. The Star regrets the error @e Hearing id (Jentre ¢f Port Perry And don't forget to bring the children. They'll get a kick out of seeing those big fire trucks, all the equipment, and some pin wheel movies as well. There will be a Jaws of Life demonstration at 3:00 P.M., and other on-going demonstrations of equipment. There will be a film ex- plaining how a family should plan an escape if fire ever strikes the home. Fire Prevention Week is design- ed to heighten public awareness of the dangers of fire, how to prevent them, and to focus attention on the local fire departments.
