x Four to two vote on Stephenson's Pt. proposal Council endorses nine additional lots By a vote of 4-2, Scugog Township council has ap- proved development of nine lots on the Stephen- son's Point Road on Scugog Island. This brings the total approved by council to 22, and the action Mon- day to add the nine almost certainly means Durham Region Police report several instances of theft from homes and businesses in Scugog Township last week. On September 16, the cash till at Dimitri's Foods on Water St. was rifled during business hours and about $50 was stolen. A resident of Scugog Island reported a quanti- ty of fishing tackle stolen from his boat moored in front of his home on Pellet Drive. A car radio-cassette was reported missing the entire development proposal will be heard at the same time in front of the Ontario Municipal Board. Residents of Stephen- son's Point have already filed formal objections to 13 lots approved by coun- cil, but the OMB has yet to set a date for that from a truck parked at the lot of Williamson Auto Sales in Prince Albert. On September 18, the owners of a home at R.R.4, Port Perry, told police a window of the house was forced open and about $1000 worth of items stolen, including a 35 mm Canon camera, a ladies gold watch and two gold wedding bands. The following day a resident of R.R.2, Port Perry, reported a break in with about $400 worth of tools and two gold New fire truck? The Fire Chief for the Caesarea Unit of the Scugog Department is getting impatient for a new fire truck that has been promised for the last couple of years. Len Scott appeared before Township council at the Monday meeting and noted that the money for the new truck has been in the budget for the past couple of years. He suggested that im- mediate steps be taken to purchase a cab and frame with the addition later of the tanks, pumps and other necessary equipment. A new fire truck for the Caesarea department was in fact on order last year, but the company that makes the trucks went bankrupt before the truck was delivered. The Township lost a down payment of about $10,000 because of the bankruptcy. However, council agreed Monday to take steps to order a new truck. There is a com- pany in Almonte, Ontario making fire trucks, and Township staff has been instructed to get prices, specifications and other information. However. councillors Don Cochrane, Harvey Graham and Neil Hunter all disagreed, stating that if the OMB is going to rule on the original 13, the application for nine more should be heard at the same time. "It would be in the best interests of all concerned if the Board heard all (22 lots) at the same time," said councillor Cochrane. Ward 2 councillor Jack Cottrell also voted in favour of the additional nine lots. Councillor Cot- trell was acting mayor for this portion of the council meeting Monday afternoon. Mayor Jerry Taylor, who has a finan- cial interest in the PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, Sept. 24, 1985 -- 3 development had declared the conflict and left the council chambers In an issue related to the Stephenson's Point development, Mayor Taylor has sent a two page letter to Scugog Island resident Joel Aldred, answering ques- tions Mr. Aldred has raised at recent council meetings concerning the Mayor's conflict of in- terest over this development. Mayor Taylor cir- culated copies of the let- ter to members of coun- cil and the press at Mon- day's meeting. Mr. Aldred had been seeking written answers to several questions in- cluding the number of meetings the mayor has missed because of the confhict of interest, whether 1t has affected the Mayor's duties at Regional council, and whether the Mayor has been docked pay for the portions of meetings he has missed due to the conflict. Mayor Taylor replied that he has missed only those portions of meetings where the sub- division was being discussed. his duties at Regional council have not been affected because it is a local issue, and no member of council 1s docked for missing meetings or por- tions of meetings. The letter to Mr. Aldred had been prepared by lawyer Michael Fowler, who has been retained by Mayor Taylor on this matter. Mr. Aldred first asked for answers to these questions in June, and as recently as September 16, he said in a letter that if he didn't receive answers, he is prepared to take the matter 'to a higher authority." After reading the Mayor's response to the questions at Monday's council meeting, members voted in favour of endorsing the reply sent to Mr. Aldred. Oct. 5th - A Night to Remember!
