A LE AE AM, 4 mS Wisin aie iii me || oh VOTE A -- BAR New owners love life in the country Just a few months ago, Peter Fitton was manag- ing a large Dominion store in mid-town Toronto. He lost his job last January when Dominion was sold to the A and P chain. In a way, that event turned out to be something of a blessing in disguise as Peter turn- ed his attentions to a long-time dream: own- ing a store in the country. Today, he's just as busy and works longer hours than he did as a Dominion manager in Toronto. Oshawa man charged A 34 year old Oshawa man faces two charges following an incident Sunday afternoon at Goreski's campground on Scugog Island. ~ Durham Police were called to the scene after reports of a man driving erratically through the grounds and allegedly pointing a cross bow at several people. Pestek Brenislaw was arrested about 2:30 P.M. and charged with dangerous driving and dangerous use of a weapon. Peter and his wife Marylou bought the Nestleton Country Store on Highway 7A last June, and they say the move to the country is suiting them just fine. "The people around here (Nestleton) have been just tremendous. They're so friendly, it almost seems like a big family," said Marylou last week during an in- terview with the Star. Peter and Marylou were amazed when they first took over the store in June and decided to move some counters and coolers and fridges. Customers would drop in to pick up their mail or a few groceries and offer to lend a hand for an hour or two, helping out with the heavy lifting. "1 guess we wanted to get out of the rat race and move to the coun- try," said Peter. "And we really like the pace here and the attitude of the people." Peter used to face an hour on the freeway each day to get to work from his home in Ajax. Now, living above the store in Nestleton, he says with a big smile that 'the drive to work is pretty easy to take.' With his 13 years in the grocery business with Dominion, Peter is put- ting his knowledge to work at the store in Nestleton, adding items like deli meats, fresh produce and household goods. He likes the idea of an old-fashioned country style store selling * everything from sham- poo to rubber boots. But aside from that, he says that a good at- mosphere and friendly approach to the customers are crucial, no matter how big or small the store. The Post Office section of the Country Store has been moved around to give Marylou a place to display antique glass and furniture which are up for sale. The Fittons are not ex- actly strangers to this part of the country. Peter has fished Lake Scugog for years. While he hasn't had too much free time for this hobby over the busy summer months, he hopes to get some days away this winter to do some ice fishing. Both Marylou and Peter seem very content with their new venture, but say they couldn't have done it without a Tot of support from their families, and close friends. Not to mention their new friends in the area who have gone out of their way to make them feel welcome. They are making a few changes to the interior of the store, adding more lines of goods, increasing the inventory and so on. One thing that hasn't changed however, is a dog named "Scamp." He's a kind of cross bred collie who came with the store, and rightly so. What country store is there without a lazy pooch lounging on the porch? mar Marylou and Peter Fitton are the new owners of the Nestleton Country Store. They took over in June and have been amazed at the friendly atmosphere in the community. It was a dream come true for Peter to own and operate a store in the country.
