Competition fierce in sanctioned barrel race at Port Perry Fair Days Thg barrel racing pot at the Port Perry Fair has been sweetened con- siderably thanks to a five hundred dollar contribu- tion from a local car dealership. Philp Pontiac Buick, the official sponsor of the Fair's second annual On- tario Barrel Racing Association 'A' Division run, has made a trip around the barrels on Labour Day Weekend a real temptation. It'll be a temptation too hard to resist for riders like Joanne 'Morehouse of Seagrave, who'll be vying for the OBRA purse (valued in total at over $1,200) along with other top-seated barrel racers from across the province. Joanne and her 4 year old gelding Wind Lancer have become the com- bination to watch in in- ternational futurity bar- rel racing competitions after two important wins in August, including the Pepsi Cola Futurity in New York, with $1,650 (U.S.) in prize money. The pair is generally regarded as the team to beat in the Fair's barrel racing event, although competition is expected to come from Debbie Racz of Newmarket, Doug McCallum of Lon- don and John McCor- mick of Thamesville. One of the last in the 'A' Series races, destined to choose North America's top barrel racer, the Philp Stake Barrel Race should be one of the most exciting events slated for the Port Perry Fair. It all takes place September 2nd at noon with entrance fees for contestants payable the day of the show. Although the Philp Stakes will hold the highest stakes and the fattest purse, don't miss the other events planned in the Western Speed Show. including the OBRA 'B' Division bar- rel race and other categories such as the Open Down and Back, Novice Down and Back. Open Poles. Youth Poles. Novice Poles, Youth Bar- rels. Novice Barrels, Open Flag, Novice Flag and Consolation Barrels. But speed isn't for everyone and more sedentary horse lovers will get a kick out of the various horse show divi- sions going on throughout the Labour Day Weekend. Chairperson Janet Johnson has lined up a wide range of events to attract horse lovers and competitors of every in- terest including the Junior Horse Show and Gymkhana, August 31 at 10 a.m. sharp. Young riders will com- pete for prize money in Showmanship on the Line, Best Turned Out Western Horse and Rider, Leadline, Western Pleasure, Best Turned Out English Horse and Rider, English Pleasure, English and Western Equitation, Working Hunter, Command, Egg and Spoon Race (always good for a laugh), Pleasure Pony (for small horses who think big), junior barrel races and Consolation Walk-Trot- Jog. Not to mention the Costume Class, a tradi- tional favourite of young riders who, in the past, have done their utmost to dress up themselves and their mounts in strange FURNACE OIL and beautiful plummage There's also a full show of Pony-Hunter- Jumpers, set for September 1st with tempting stake classes and prize money from various local businesses. On September 2nd Judge Ken Bursau will be training his ex- perienced eyes on the Open Pleasure Horse Show with cash and mer- chandise offered for rib- bon winners. Fred Christie is the chairman for this year's Draft Horses competi- tion which will pit the area's top Clydesdales, Percherons, Belgians and other breeds against each other in various team and wagon classes.
