On August 3rd and 4th, the Seagrave team won the Pepsi Cola Futurity, at Attica, New York. The annual event featured 40 horses and riders, from as far away as Oklahoma, and is one of the 'prestige' shows on the futurity barrel racing circuit. Joanne was the only Canadian rider entered. Second place was taken by Sue Stover of Pennsylvania, third by Susie Stein of Wash- ington, and fourth by former Quarterama win- ner Louise McIntire of Indianna The Pepsi Cola Futuri- ty paid Joanne $1,650.00 (U.S) to win. Futurities are special events for young horses in training, usually 3 or 4 year olds, who may not have entered a barrel race prior to this year. Port Perry is fortunate to have an Ontario Championship Barrel Race in the same series scheduled for the Port Perry Fair. Philp Pon- tiac Buick have added $500.00 to the purse (which should exceed $1,200.00) to attract the top riders. Local rider Joanne is locked in a tight 4-way battle for the Championship with Deb- bie Racz of Newmarket, Doug McCallum of Lon- don, and John McCor- mick of Thamesville, so the Philp Stake Barrel Race, one of the last in the series, should be an exciting event. Come to the Fair, and see some of the best bar- rel racing in Canada, on September 2, at 12:00 noon. Hardest part about pie sale is deciding between apple or raisin. Mmm... Scugog Island News by Mrs. Earl Reader Aug. 29 doesn't give you much time now to make up your mind about those orders for homemade pies. What pies? you say. I guess you haven't heard of the reputation the young "Friendship" U.C.W. has gained for themselves with their homemade pies for only $3.00. Nowhere can you order apple, blueberry, cherry, raspberry or raisin for that price. Now is the chance for all you working mothers, bachelors etc. to stock your freezers at no extra time except a phone call to 985-3470, 7664 or 7524 and then pick them up at the Island United church Sat. Sept. 14, 10a.m. to 2 p.m. Come early because there will be other baked goods, crafts and a white elephant table. While chatting with friends you may enjoy free refreshments. O.K. don't let these dates and op- portunities slip by. At the Island United on Sunday we were pleased to welcome visitors from Sudbury the son-in-law of Eliza and Maurice Fralick and their 3 granddaughters who are almost grown up now. Mr and Mrs. Fred Bigham and family who were visiting with Beth and Allen Martyn and our new friend, Mrs White from Alberta wh. had arrived months ago in time to help Carol and Brian Robinson when their little daughter ar- rived. So, of course, Mrs. White was anxious to see the little girl again as well as all her other new friends The share the wealth table was well loaded again and was much ap- preciated by those who emptied it. Of great interest was the display of mounted. coloured pictures in the lobby of the Bible School and the Chicken Barb-b- que evening when many found themselves on can- did camera The many children present were happy to see Duggan back and hear about his interest in baseball and its relation- ship to God See you all at the Ashbridge sale at the "Head" this Sat There are some very in- teresting items and especially the antiques.
