The play went from end to end and Whitby were kept off the scoreboard by the very strong play of the defence by David Pashley and at the end of the first half the score was still 1-0 for Port Perry. The second half started off with Port Perry pressing the at- tack and keeping the play in the Whitby half The Whitby defense hung strong and Port Perry only managed two shots on goal in the first ten minutes The constant pressure finally paid off at the fifteen minute mark when Jeff Andrews Turn to page 2 4) Selects on the move in series Colin Haines, coach of the Cummings Backhoe Cartwright Select team, reports that the team 1s now playing in the On- tario playdowns They first met Claremont in a best two out of three games. and defeated Claremont by scores of 18-0 and 6-0 On Wed Aug 14. they will meet Coboconk In the first of a best two out of three series On Thurs- day Aug 15, they play Coboconk at7 00 P M at their home diamond in Nestleton The team would appreciate fan support for this impor- tant game If Cummings defeats Coboconk. they will proceed to the all On- tano championships held at Charbot Lake on the LLabour Day weekend The team were finalists in the all Ontario s last year and with support from all of us on Thurs Aug 15, we hope to see them go all the way' to load the bases with none out. First baseman Ken DeGraw homered for Wardsville. On Sunday night the two teams locked horns at Greenbank Park and this time the game went 13 innings before Ward- sville finally won it 1-0 on a home run by catcher Bob Fisher. The Gamblers had op- portunities to win the game but failed to capitalize on their chances. Their best op- portunity came in the bottom of the ninth inn- ing when lead off hitter Ne'l Rodd was on third base with nobody out but a weak grounder to short, a strikeout and finally Rodd was nipped at the plate when he tried to score on a passed ball. When the Gamblers missed this golden op- portunity to put the game away, the tide appeared to swing to Wardsville and Fisher's home run finally gave them the lead. However, it took an outstanding play by the Wardsville first baseman in the bottom of the 13th to finally lock up the win. Brian Till led off the Gambler 13th with a clean single to left field. Ray Meisner attempted to bunt him to second but the first baseman made a diving catch of Meisner"s bunt and doubled Till off first base. Pitcher Russ Korbak led the Greenbank hit- ters with a pair of safeties with single hits going to Neil Rodd, Den- nis Romeril, Don Beaton, Greg Rodd and Brian Till The third and deciding game will go this weekend in the Cam- bridge area (which is halfway between Green- bank and Wardsville) probably on Saturday night. So the 100 mile drive to Cambridge this weekend should provide fastball fans with some super entertainment, so plan to make the trip and sup- port the Gamblers in this do or die game The winner of this sud- den death game moves directly to the O R S A Inter "A" final The North Durham Fastball 'eague play downs will start next we~k as all postponed games that could affect the league standings will be played this week At the time of writing, the first round opponent for the Gamblers has not been decided but the series will definitely start next week i nl rl he ba oe ami
