And he says that Scugog yields more than its fair share of muskie, many in the 20 to 30 pound range, which when mounted would do justice to the den or office of any fisherman. Last year, a muskie over 40 pounds was taken from Scugog, and Keith is convinced that even larger fish are in the lake. The world record, by the way, taken on rod and reel is a 69 pounder from the St. Lawrence River. In its physical ap- pearance, the muskie ranks as one of the most beautiful of all the fresh water fish. The belly is pure white, the back a shade of very dark green with lighter green and brown markings on the side. Very strong in the water, the muskie is built: as a predator; sleek, with a huge head and jaws. EDITOR'S NOTE: In preparing this story, I * joined Keith for a morn- ing of fishing on Lake Scugog on a bright, clear, sunny day last week. Time for both of us was limited, and frankly, I didn't expect to see any fish that morning. The sun was too bright, the wind too calm, not the kind of day when muskie hit readily. With Keith's wife Tam- my at the controls of the Grew, we set the lines for a troll through the chan- nel areas of the east arm. We used Swim Whiz in the shape and colour of perch and bass, along with a "Strawberry Believer." The large bright lures are better on a sunny day. After about an hour on the lake and a half dozen passes over the same area, Keith remarked that the wind was pick- ing up and turning slight- ly from the northwest, a good sign. No sooner had he made the comments when one of the rod tips snapped down and the 40 pound test line screamed quick- ly off the reel. Keith grabbed the rod and I reached for my camera. "We've got a muskie," Keith holds up two of the large lures which are among the dozens he used to coax a strike out of a Lake Scugog muskie. Fri. Even at the distance, the tail, fins and head were clearly visible. Keith handed me the rod (carefully) so that | could get a feel of the strength and power of the fish on the other end. For someone like myself used to fishing small speckled and lake trout, the sheer weight was amazing as the fish took more line from the reel. I wanted more pictures and handed the rod back to Keith. He began to get the muskie closer to the boat. We decided it would be released and Keith gingerly put the PORT PERRY STAR -- Wed. August 7, 1985 -- 23 gaff to the under-side of the lip and with a pair of long-handled pliers at tempted to remove the hooks. But the fight was far from gone from this muskie. He flipped his tail and headed straight for the prop of the boat as Keith held on to the rod. Slowly, he brought the fish back beside the boat, put the gaff into the lip and freed the hook with pliers. It was a nice one, likely in the 20 to 23 pound range. Once free of gaff and hooks, it lay for a few seconds just "under the surface of the water, then flicked its tail once and was gone. It was quite an ex- perience for me. Keith said that no matter how many muskie he catches, the thrill is always there. We fished another hour or so, had one more strike, and then decided to pack it up for the day. We had been forttinate to get the one fish in less than two hours on the lake. It was my first taste of muskie fishing, and 1 began to see why some fishermen develop such Ss no enemy an intensity about this species of fish. I was glad that the muskie had been releas- ed un-harmed back into the lake (so was Keith) but I admit to a twinge of regret at not keeping it for mounting and display on the wall of the office. Maybe next time. For more info about Muskie Mate Cruises, contact Keith Mullins at 986-5578. LOOKING FOR A PLACE TO ADVERTISE YOUR BUSINESS?
