PORT PERRY STAR -- Wed. August 7, 1985 -- 15 | Past year has been great for political buff OTTAWA REPORT by Allan Lawrence, M.P. Durham -- Northumberland For anyone involved or interested in politics and government, these past 12 months have been ex- tremely busy and exciting. Playing fast and loose with federal finances, as we have learned in re- cent years, leads to mounting inflation and higher interest rates - from which no groups suffer more than the economically disadvan: taged and those living on fixed incomes. Even within those con straints, this government has brought many welcome changes. We have a new era of enlightenment of Revenue Canada through the Taxpayers' Bill of Rights. A major program was launched to reduce the ravages of acid rain. A new Divorce Act and legislation to en- fore support and custody orders is before Parliament. Consumers and small business stand to benefit from revision of the laws governing financial in stitutions. Women and visible minorities are be- ing given better job op- portunities in businesses under federal jurisdic- tion. Spousal allowance benefits are being ex- tended to some 85,000 low-income widows and widowers in the 60 to 64 years age bracket. Locally there are two developments since the federal election that 1 particularly want to mention. First, VIA Rail passenger service has been restored to the nor- thern part of our area. I'm hopeful increasing numbers' will again use this train and justify its continued operation. Secondly, we have finally got federal authorities to take a close look at our radioac- tive wastes problem in Port Hope, Hope Township and Newcas- tle. One of the federal ministers concerned visited the area in March and another will come (Turn to page 26) In thinking back over all that has happened during that time, one has to be somewhat amazed at the profound changes which have taken place. It's the opening of a new 5 chapter in our history. It seems rather hard to believe that just a year ago at this time John Turner was taking over from Pierre Trudeau as Prime Minister, a federal election was ex- pected, and there was as much speculation about 1g i a the outcome. y Within the past six AY i months provincially 1 : we've seen changes of | Ym -- ll a A ) i premiers and an election AY \ | which left the Ontario CASHW, 3 CHECK OUT OUR picture considerably BOILING CEN TTI Ww 0 ~ FLYER FOR ier EVEN MORE YARD ! we've become accustom- REN D 0 ) SALE SAVINGS! ed to over the previous : oS a AQ | four decades.
