Kemptville prevails with a 3-0 shut-out PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, July 23, 1985 -- 23 Port Legion reaches the quarter finals Port Perry Legion travelled to Russell, south-east of Ottawa over the past weekend to compete in their third tournament in three weeks. Port was eliminated in the quarter-finals by Kemp- tville 3-0 after having won their division three games to none; defeating Picton 4-0, Stittsville Jr.s 7-1 and Ottawa's March Raiders 4-0. The Legion squad, sup- ported by strong pitching from John Annis and Lawrie Williams allowed one error in four games playing excellent defen- sively. The Branch 419r's hitting was led by out- fielder, Scott Wilbur, who put on an awesome hitting display with a .556 average, while getting DANCE & BUFFET walked 3 times. Game one against Pic- ton featured John Annis hurling a 3-hitter while striking out 16 batters in the seven inning game This game saw the return of Rob Evans to his old position as catcher after having come back successfully from shoulder surgery last season. Rob was pressed into duty as cat- cher Jack Bright was nursing a hand injury and Todd Wilbur was confined to a cottage for the week at Grand Bend. Hope they both recover soon. Game two against Stittsville Jrs. had Lawrie Williams toss a 2-hitter while striking out eleven. Port's attack was led by Jay Williams with Every Saturday Night 3 hits, Scott Wilbur and Colin Wackett with 2 hits and singles going to Rick Evans, Dave Dickson, Lawrie Williams and Doug Scott. Game three saw John Annis toss another shutout allowing 4 hits in the 4-0 victory, while striking out 13 batters. 'Again Scott Wilbur led the way with his hitting and base stealing prowess. In the feature game of the day, Port Legion fac- ed a strong club from Kemptville bowing out 3-0. Losing pitcher was Lawrie Williams. Port was stifled on one hit by Rick Evans. A couple of key defensive plays were supplied by third baseman Dave Dickson to keep the game close. In league play earlier in the week, Port reverted to old form, los- ing to Oshawa Sr. 'A's' and Copperfields hang- ing onto second place by 3 points over the bottom team makes the playoff race quite interesting as Durham York MPP Ross Stevenson A Port takes the 5th place: Oshawa Juniors twice; home Wednesday night at 8:30 p.m. and away to Durham Fields on Thurs- day night. On Friday night Port Legion opens the in- ternational softball con- gress tournament in Oshawa against a senior team from Scarborough. This tournament is a senior 'A' elimination featuring all of the top teams in the province vy- ing for the opportunity to represent Ontario in the [.S.C. Championship in California. Port Perry entered for the competi- tion and experience this p calibre of teams will supply. Hope to see some support from the home town fans as no doubt we'll need it! The Canadian Tire tournament on the August holiday weekend has been filled with 3 new teams and 8 teams com- ing back from last years tournament.
