He related some of the early history of the town Plans for a new hall (From page 1) Washrooms, a full kit- chen and bar would be constructed on the se- cond floor, along with a service elevator. Mr. Heffering said committee members are convinced there is a need in this community for a large hall and they are confident it would get wide-spread use for ban- quets, meetings, wed- i ding receptions and dances. He said the plans have been presented to the Scugog Arena Board, and were "received with interest" by the Board. He told councillors that while no budgets oF firflt - JUST GRADUATED? And he was confident that with Wintario grants, the full cost could be made up from com- munity fund-raising activities. Several local service clubs are interested in working on fund raising: for the project, he said. "The need for such a facility is here now, and it should be started soon or the costs could in- crease even higher," he said. And he noted that had such a banquet hall been included in thecgn: struction of the arena in 1975-76, the cost at that time would have been around $70,000. After the meeting, Mr. Heffering told the Star he hopes that a meeting can be held this fall with all the groups and organiza- tions that use the arena and could get use from a banquet hall. He expressed the hope that if the project gets off the ground, construction could start some time next summer, with com- pletion late in 1986. Members of council expressed interest in the concept of the project, but discussion was limited as this was mere- "ly an initial information meeting. and that D.D. Palmer founder of Chiropractic was born in Port Perry on March 7th 1845. Palmer's grandparents moved from Penn- sylvania to Canada in 1824. In 1844 Palmer's father married Catherine McVay and the following year Daniel David was born. He spent his boyhood in Port Perry and in 1865 left Port Perry and eventual- ly ended up in Davenport Iowa. In 1938 the National Chiropractic Assoc. of the United States held a convention in Toronto and they drove in a motorcade to Port Perry. Here the town of- ficials named the pic- turesque lake front park the Palmer Memorial Park. A fund was started to erect the Palmer monument. At that time 2 elderly ladies of Port Perry was interviewed. One was Mrs. Naomi Coburn who stated that" Dan Palmer was a very popular boy, strong, merry and excep- tionally keen minded." The other lady, a Mrs. Allison, stated that, "we all thought that Daniel Palmer would do great things and I for one am glad that the village council has honoured his memory by naming the park after him. On August 14th, 1946 the monument was dedicated with a large number in attendance. The visitors were welcomed by the late Reeve Fred Reesor. The monument was unveiled by the Provincial Secretary the Honorable Rolland Michener, later to become the Governor General of#&Canada. Via is back on track again (From page 1) Ray Nash, who lives south of Port Perry and works in downtown Toronto. He's been commuting by bus since the rail ser- vice was disbanded near- ly four years ago, and he told the Star he "can hardly wait' to start us- ing the train again. "But we've got to sell it and we've got to keep it going,"' he warned as he handed out his own printed pamphlets to everyone in sight urging them to use the train. Mr. Nash said the $9 daily return fare from Myrtle to Toronto will be a little more than he's paying now for the bus, but he says there will be no traffic jams and the coach will be more com- fortable and relaxing. It will take a little more than an hour for 3RD ANNUAL ELIMINATION DRAW nave the train to make the run from Myrtle to Union Station, but that time should be lowered as im- provements are made to the tracks and road bed over the next few months. Via anticipates the train will carry about 54,000 passer gers in the first year of operation. Other stops along the way will be at Burketon, Pontypool, Manvers, Cavan and Peter- borough. The final stop before Union Station will be Locust Hill. The ser- vice will be in operation seven days per week. From Monday to Fri- day, the train will stop in Myrtle at 7:17 in the mor- ning and arrive in Toron- to at 8:30. Anyone wishing full information on arrivals and depar- tures for all stops along the route should contact Via Rail. AND $5,000. IN PRIZES TO BE WON?
