Sixteen teams started out in the double knock- out competition hosted by the Gators, including seven local slow pitch squads. The final between the Beermen and Gofor Sports from Oshawa looked like it might turn into a rout as the Beermen took a comfor- table 14-8 lead into the final inning. But the Gofors got the bats going in a big way and helped by a couple of miscues in the field, they scored four runs to narrow the gap to two runs. They had a glorious chance to win the game with two down and bases loaded. But the final came out with a sharp ground ball to the pitcher who made the toss to first base. The Beermen took home $400 for their first place finish, while the Gofors went away with $100. In the consolation final, Roy's of Oshawa knocked off Pete's Mumblees from Whitby by a score of 15-8. These ment, but grounds keepers with the host Gators put the fields in playing condition and games went on until after midnight. The tournament was not without its 'minor' incidents, specifically a member of the Gators teams earned $250 and wel $100 for their efforts. Of the seven local teams, Sportsland fared best as the only squad to make it to Sunday's com- petitions. But they lost in the quarter finals to the strong Roy's team by a score of 10-3. Bob Knapp of Sport- sland was selected as the MVP from among the players on the local teams and he received a new glove, courtesy of Spalding. Last year, the event raised about $5000, which is used by the Arena Board in its general budget, and organizers are hoping that this year all 1000 tickets will be sold by the time the draw is held on June 15. Tickets are $10 each and are also good for ad- mission to the dance at - the Arena on Draw Night where music will be sup- plied by MG Disco. The stub from each ticket sold is placed in a large drum for the draw, and the last ticket pulled from the drum wins the grand prize of $4000. There are also smaller prizes for $50 for several tickets and the next to last ticket drawn is worth $200. The draw and dance will get underway about 9:00 P.M. on June 15 and it is expected that the final ticket will be pulled just after midnight. Patrons attending the dance can follow the results of the draw as names are posted as the tickets are pulled from the bin. The suspense begins to build as the number of tickets left in the bin declines. Last year, 864 tickets were sold and the grand prize was split by Ken Goreski and the Junior C hockey club who both wound up with $2100. Tickets for this year's event are available at the following locations: Greg's Mens Wear, Sportsland and Do-No's Hobby Shop. Don't be disappointed. Get a ticket and join in the fun. Any tickets not sold prior to June 15 will be available at the door that evening. And remember, the funds raised go to a good cause. Contact 986-4264 (who shall remain nameless) who went to retrieve a home run ball beyond the left field fence at the north diamond. He thought he was on solid ground, but one step in the wrong spot put him up to his waist in thick, black Lake Scugog mud. He eventually had to be hauled out of the gooey mess by several guys using a row boat. The hapless chap was none the worse for his ordeal, but his buddies got more than a chuckle at his expense. .
