er ----_-- -- Remembering V-E Allan Lance M.P. (Durham - Northumberland) This past week was a time of historic remem- brance for Canada, as we commenorated the 40th anniversary of the end of the Second World War in Europe. We remembered V-E . Day, 'when the victory that once had seemed uncertain was finally won over fascism in Europe. It was a'great victory that meant more than we can ever im- agine for each of us per- sonally, for Canada, and for our world. When you read this I will be in Europe, with a delegation of veterans paying homage to those thousands of Canadian servicemen who were killed while fighting to free. the world of Naziism. Forty years is a large part of anyone's lifetime, and memories grow dim. ° Now there are genera- tions of adults for whom World War II can't mean much at all. They know of it, but it's outside their frame of personal experience. In many respects that war was a unique ex- perience for Canada. It was a time when, as a still young nation, we had to flex our muscles, and when we discovered to our surprise just how strong they could be. Canada has never been militaristic, and most of us hope and pray it never will be. Yet in 1945 Canada fielded a full- scale army on the Euro- pean continent, an army fondly remembered for its role in liberating Holland and Belgium. In 1945, in terms of the size of our air force and navy, Canada ranked among the very top world powers. That was an incredible accomplishment for a country which, only six years previously, had a negligible navy, no first- qf line aircraft, and not a single tank for its army. We proved then that, while we aren't a war- like people, we do have the will to defend ourselves. Regrettably several thousand young Canadians also had to prove that they were prepared to sacrifice their lives when their principles and their way of life were threatened. More than 2,300 of those Canadians who are buried at Groesbeek, in the Netherlands, were honoured in a special ceremony there last week. Hundreds of Cana- dian veterans made a special pilgrimage, and the warm hospitality of the Dutch people showed they have not forgotten nor has their apprecia- tion lessened for that Canadian assistance 40 long years ago. Another delegation of veterans is visiting Sici- ly and Italy, where Cana- dians formed an impor- (Turn to page 35) _ The Tuesday Afternoon Ladies Bowling League finished off its season Tuesday, May 7th with a banquet at Emiel's Place.
