New Democrats third in Durham York Wilbur feels minority government is best . py. ---- + Marg Wilbur had much praise for her family last Thursday night as she told her supporters they stood behind her during the entire campaign. Mrs. Wilbur took a minute to pose for the camera with her family after Dupont to experiment with nylon it became apparent she would not be vic- torious in her bid for the Durham-York seat. Employees with the Dupont plant at Whitby received endorsement from Scugog Council April 29 for the test pro- gram which will involve placing strips of strong, black nylon material on the bottom of Lake Scugog over a plot about 1600 square feet just off shore from the Memorial Library. ' Barbara Houghton, a process engineer with Dupont told the council the material has been us- ed successfully to control weed growth in other areas, including Ontario Place. She said the nylon bar- rier, which comes in strips eight feet wide, is virtually puncture proof, and is made with vents to allow gases from decom- posing vegetation to escape. The barrier blocks out sunlight and kills both the stems and roots of the aquatic weeds. She said the best time to put the barrier on the bottom is before the weeds start to grow. Dupont will closely monitor the project over the summer, remove the barrier in the fall and present council with a report on the effec-. tiveness, she said. Ms. Houghton said that if it proves effective, the nylon barrier would be suitable for cottage and lakefront owners to control weeds over an area in front of their properties for swimming and boating. Members of council, who have tried in more than one way to deal with serious weed growth in Thank you Durham-York for your support. Ross Stevenson, M.P.P. property the lake the past two summers, were more than willing to give the endorsement to the Du- pont experiment. The product is available for sale com- mercially at about seven cents per square foot. The strips of nylon are anchored to the bottom of the lake. It is expected the nylon. will be placed on the test plot in the very near future, and Dupont will put up a sign on shore telling the public about the experiment. 'RUBBER STAMPS Fast Delivery PORT PERRY STAR 235 Queen Street 985-7383 PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, May 7, 1985 -- 3 Bob Rae and his New Democrat Party were all smiles on Thursday night last week, even though they did not become the official oppositon. But in the committee room of the NDP in Port Perry, party supporters were showing little en- thusiasm about 9:00 p.m. as the returns began to roll in, showing the par- ty losing out to the Liberals and PC's once again in Durham York riding. The walls of NDP com- mittee room on Casimir Street were lined with posters and a graph showing all of the polling stations throughout the Durham-York riding. Party supporters, sipp- ing coffee and smoking cigarettes watched as the returns showed up on a small colour TV in the corner of the room, while the phones rang as results were telephoned in from various polling stations. Amidst all of the confu- sion, Marg Wilbur, look- ing a little worn out after a long campaign, managed a smile, although her disappoint- ment was obvious. In an interview with the Star, Mrs. Wilbur said that she was disap- pointed with the results, based on the "feel" she had developed during the campaign. "I felt our figures would be much higher than we are get- ting," she said. Speaking to her sup- porters and campaign workers Mrs. Wilbur said that they had run a very positive campaign and that their leader, Bob Rae had done an ex- cellent job. 'It appears as if we will still be in third place, so I don't know what the solution is," she said. With still a lot of the vote to come in, Mrs, Wilbur said she felt that voters were disen- chanted with the current Progressive Conser- vative government, and it was showing up in the results. Unfortunately, she said, it appears that the Liberals have been able to pick up more of those votes than the New Democrats. "Frank Miller sym- bolized the old Tory regime, and the people have decided against that," said Mrs. Wilbur. Before leaving her committee room to go and congratulate Ross Stevenson, the incum- bent PC candidate, Mrs. Wilbur singled out Roy Grierson for his help. "1 can't keep up with Roy," she said. "We could not have run near as good a campaign without his help." In closing she said that she had hoped the NDP would have ben able to break-through this elec- tion and get somewhere, but it appeared as if they would end up third, even though there would be a slight improvement from the 81' election. "A minority govern- ment is best, because it keeps everyone on their toes, and the NDP will be an important part of that minority government,' she concluded. at the restaurant that cares ...
