PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, May 7, 1985 -- 29 A review by parent Bobbie Drew Cornish audience shining faces confirmed Once Upon A Frog joy We had to get there early for a seat. All the pre-sale tickets sold fast and it's no wonder, Miss Susan Reed of R.H. Cor- nish is fast-gaining a name for herself as a children's playwright. Her latest effort 'Once Upon a Frog" -- a brilliant production writ- ten directed and produc- ed by Susan Reed was cleverly composed for a large cast and it was evi- dent that each and every person on the stage had been coached to play-act an individual character. The story was about a youngster named Matt (played by Ron Halligan) who was despondent and un- cooperative because of a move to a new subdivi- sion. His Mom (Nancy Imperial) in exaspera- tion suggests a walk for fresh air. Matt decides to go to the frog pond and there he meets "Fred" (Andrea Kindree) his Fairy Frogfather and he is granted seven wishes. Matt insults Fred wishing him to get lost and in his attempts to find Fred to apologize wastes another wish -- wishing the other frogs to talk. He wishes to be anywhere but where he is and like magic he is in a little village called "Wookares."' Understan- dably Matt is frustrated trying to find out the name of the town and be- ing answered "Wookares," and doubly so when being introduced to the Mayor' 'Whatdo- youwant" (Brian Lucyk). Matt figures life would be a lot less complicated if Fred were aperson and voila 'Old Fred' (Max Daigle) delighted the au- dience with his inter- pretation of a how a little old green (frog) man should be. Matt meets the Mayor's daughter San- dra (Sarah Morris) and despite the attempts of the protective housekeeper (Jennifer Fowler) Sandra manages to sneak away for an adventure with Matt. The surly pirates headed by their captain gruff Jon David Rodway captured Sarah, and Matt gqes to the rescue saving Sandra and the town. His last wish he plann- ed to use to get home but he is forced to use it in his attempts to save the town, but with good faith and the support of the townspeople he clicks his heels and next thing you know his parents wake him up beside the frog pond. The neighbours who are happening by meet Matt and his family and as all good fairy tales should end their daughter is Sandy (one and the same). Matt has decided that his new neighbourhood isn't so bad and it looks like they are going to live happily ever after. The evening was delightful and entertain- ing. The music and lyrics also written by Susan Reed were very catchy -- we sang them all the way home. The instrumental arrangements by John Beirness, piano ar- rangements by John Bark along with their musicians provided an excellent background for the singers, supportive but not over-powering. We are indeed very for- tunate to have these talented people within our own community. The students taking part in all aspects of the drama did an excellent job -- lighting, stage crew, sound effects, as well as those who design- ed and painted a very convincing set, all deserve warm praise. Each and every person (or frog) on the stage played a very important part and played it well. One could easily forget that the group of townspeople were really students because they looked and acted like mothers, housewives and shopkeepers. The frogs appeared and sounded for all the world like they were on a lily pad in a big pond and all the leads and sub-leads were stperb. One had to just look at the shining faces of the children of all ages in the audience to see the reac- tion to this very clever production. Bravo Susan Reed and your produc- tion staff and Drama Club, we're looking for- ward to the next one. Council to conduct heart disease survey Heart disease and cancer are the two ma jor causes of death for Durham Region adults. What is not known, however, is what people know about these diseases, and what they are currently doing to prevent them. A sample survey of 1000 adults living in Durham Region households will be con- ducted between late March and June. The' survey will be conducted by telephone by a team of trained interviewers. Information will be collected and analyzed for each of the five plan- ning areas in Durham: Oshawa - Whitby, Ajax - Pickering, Newcastle, Uxbridge - Scugog, and Brock. A final report, to be submitted to the District Health Council in December, will include recommendatiions for planning health promo- tion programs. -In order to obtain quality results, the pro- ject staff needs a high level of response from the community. If you happen to be called, please spend some time talking with the project staff. For fur- ther information, call Ken Allison, Project Coordinator, Community Health Survey, 434-7629.
