Held at Picov's Horseman"s Centre, the Spring 'Speed Show featured $5,000.00 in prize money, with riders com- ing from Quebec and four northern States, some of the toughest competition barrel racers can expect in On- tario all year. 191 entries were made to the well- supported show. The Futurity was split into two runs. Joanne won both, and $530.00 for her 30 seconds total com- petition time, from a _ gross purse of $1,700.00. Men riders from Quebec were second and third, while a girl from New York State placed fourth. Joanne and her horse also won the "B"' - divi- sion race for new horses, and another $120.00. - Joanne and Wind Lancer are not strangers to the winners circle, as she piloted the speedy gelding to a 5th place finish out of 104 entries in the Georgia Futurity in February, bringing $1,200.00 back to Canada. In the Sterivet Futurity held at Quarterama in Toronto during March, the young horse placed 6th. The major class at the Spring Speed Show was the Absorbine Stake Bar- rel Race, with 44 entries and a gross purse of $3,300.00. Winner of both runs and $760.00 was Katherine Solomon of New York City. Second highest money-earner was John McCormick of, London, Ontario, winn- ing $470.00. The Absorbine Stake Barrel Race was the first of 20 Ontario Barrel Race Championship events for 1985.
