16 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, April 23, 1985 TV fans prove they are Just Like Mom Despite their dif- ferences, Sharri Master- son and Jennifer Flet- cher are just like their moms. . In fact, the Cartwright area girls are s6 much like their mothers, they both won top prizes when they appeared on the highly popular game show Just Like Mom, You've seen the show. It's the one where kids are forced to answer dumb or embarrassing questions, hoping their mothers answers will match up with theirs and vicey versa. Sort of like the Newlywed Game for the younger set. Except for the Bake- Off, that is. Both Sharri and Jennifer's favourite part and the key to win- ning big on Just Like Mom. For one whole minute the contestants are let] in the studio kit- chen Weigh ingredients like pop, flour, olives, butter, licorice, lemon juice, salt, ketchup, chocolate chips and mustard. They're given specific items to make (Jennifer, for example, was asked to make carrot muffins), but most young con- testants give in to their wildest taste desires and wind up putting ketchup and Coca-Cola in everything. For More Information, Call Not Jennifer or Sharri, however. They managed _ to avoid the really yucky stuff. Still, when the mothers were forced to taste each of the Bake- Off entries, Sharri's mom Ginny had no pro- blem figuring out which, uh, delicacy, was her daughter's. Sour Jaws ""Sharri's was the worst," she chuckled. "It was all that lemon juice she put in it. My jaws just ached If someone had told me the best joke in the world, I wouldn't have been able to laugh after eating that." And while Jennifer _ managed to control the lemon juice (she did use a bit), she went whole hog on the flour instead. "I dumped a bag of flour in the carrot muffin recipe,' she admits. The result, says her mom Linda, was a very salty, very hard rock in the shape of a muffin. Regardless, both sets of moms and daughters were able to snafu 50 points for winning the Bake-Off, which put them both ahead to win their own separate games. And how, you ask, did they get on Just Like Mom in the first place? Ever since Just Like Mom first aired, Bruton's Drug Store clerk, Ginny Masterson and her now 11 year old New 20% HNC Weanling-Starter is the success formula for faster growth D H &M WRIGHT FEED COMPANY LIMITED 13 Scugog Street North, Blackstock, Ontario TELEPHONE: 986-4201 daughter Sharri have watched it as often as they could, truly enjoy- ing the antics of mother and daughter teams figuring, like everybody else who watches game shows on a regular basis, that they could do just as well as the contestants on television. Cook Book? During taping season, an ad is flashed on the screen asking for con- testants for the show. Ac- ting on a whim and Sharri's insistent pleading, Ginny wrote a letter to Just Like Mom and promptly received a cook book. Which was nice, but not quite what she had in mind. So she sent CFTO- TV another letter and this time things worked out. Last October the Mastersons application to be on the show was ac- cepted and a taping date was set for December 17th. Unable to contain her excitement, Sharri told .School friend Jennifer Fletcher (both girls at- tend Cartwright Central Public School in Blackstock) about the show, which immediate- ly set Jennifer off pester- ing her own mother, teacher Linda Fletcher. "1 kept saying, 'Can we go, can we go, can we go?" recalls Jennifer. "And I kept saying, 'Can we not go, can we not go, ' " laughs her mom. As per usual, Linda gave in and. before it really had a chance to sink jn, both pairs were down at CFTO's Just Like Mom studio in Agin- court to meet' hosts Fergie Olver and Catherine Swing (who happen to be a real life husband and wife team). Rabble Rousers Each pair took separate support teams with them including local kids and rabble rousers Vicki Schryburt, Dan- nielle Nelson, Ashley, Cameron and Hailey Western, Jeff Fletcher, Heather Rountree, Con- nie Denault, Timmy Masterson, Joel Schryburt, Chris Chorestecki, Heather Lawrence, Michele Taylor, Terri Martin, Chrissie Chase, Brandie Waldriff and Jill Van Camp, all from the Scugog area. At one point the Masterson support team got so carried away with screaming and whistling and cheering, that hostess Catherine Swing asked them (ever so EITM TT TIENEN TIEN WT ORTTTT™™ - - . mT. The questions asked of contestants were bas- ed on r~<'mes they when they initially applied, listing all sorts of interests and hobbies. Just Like Mom writers took those resumes and made up questions, designed to put both the Mom and kid on the spot. Jennifer, for example, was asked to reveal the worst trick she could possibly play on her mom. Jennifer thought it would be hiding Linda's gymnastic reports (she teaches gym). When Linda was asked the same question, she thought Jennifer might put snakes in her water bed. Jennifer agreed that snakes would probably be a worst trick than hiding the reports. And while both teams made mistakes throughout the show, it was the infamous Bake- Off which earned them enough points to win their individual shows. Their prizes included tennis equipment, jewellery, and two weeks at Camp Onondaga near Minden, Ontario. Winning the game also gave the contestants a shot at the "wheel'"', where Jennifer won herself riding lessons and an equestrian outfit and Sharri won a set of wrist watches. ""'Sharri gave it a pret- ty hard spin," says Gin- ny. "I think she's been watching The Price Is Right too much." The show featuring Ginny and Sharri was shown two weeks ago, but could be seen again on other channels or repeats. Or you could catch the "'stars" in ac- tion on the Masterson's videotape. The Fletcher team wasn't so lucky, however. The day their show was supposed to go ahead was the same day Armenian Freedom Fighters took over the Turkish Embassy in Ot- tawa. Thus the Flet- chers, and Just Like Mom, was pre-empted. Fortunately the show will be played again. And unless somebody else decides to take over another embassy, you can catch it on August 27th.
