Candidateshave ij more voters to chase in race The three candidates seeking election in Durham: York will be chasing more eligible voters than there were in the last election in 1981. Returning Officer Gord MacMillan said that as of last Friday, 49,898 people had been enumerated in the riding, and that number could climb even higher as more are added to the voting lists between now and election day on May 3 That's an increase of almost 6000 eligible voters. In 1981, there were 44,170 people entitl- ed to cast ballots in this riding. Mr. MacMillan said the increase in the number of voters this year reflects the general population growth in Durham York. While there were 44,170 eligible voters in the 1981 election, not all of them Crusade St. John Ambulance was formed in Canada in 1883, and it has its roots in the Crusades. The modern training and ser- vice organization traces its ancestry to knights who established a hospital for Crusaders in Jerusalem in the 12th . century. cast ballots, not by a long shot. In fact, just 25,173 ex- ercised their right four years ago, or 57 per cent. The voter turn-out in this riding was ane percen- tage point lower than the provincial average of 58 per cent. Mr. MacMillan told the Star there is no reason why anyone should miss their vote in this riding, even a person who has been left off the lists on election day. He explained that Durham York is con- sidered a rural riding where the procedure known as "vouching" is permitted, unlike urban and city ridings. Basically, if a person has been left off the list for some reason, another person from the same polling division can vouch for the identity on election day, and the per- son left off the list will be permitted to cast a ballot. For the first time in Ontario, judges, mental- ly ill persons and those in penal institutes not under sentence may vote in this election. At advance polls, which will be held April 25, 27 and 29, must have wheelchair access, and there are special provi- sions to assist the visual- ly impaired to vote. New. Improved.
