More than $75,000 in prizes are available in the first annual Canadian Tire Masters Fishing: Derby Sweepstakes, held July 1 through 22. "The purpose of the Derby is not to see who can catch the biggest fish, but to promote the use of live-release fishing techniques when ap- propriate," says Cana- dian Tire Master Angler Jack Hedger. Hedger, an outdoor writer and avid fisherman since the age of 6, is spokesman for the National Derby. He points to a number .of reasons why our fishery resources are dwindling. "The environment im- pact of overfishing is one factor that can't be ig- rored,"" he notes. "Cana- dians have more leisure time than ever before which means they have more time to pursue out- door activities such as fishing. Keeping a boun- tiful supply of healthy fish is in everyone's best interest.' Posters and applications . outlining details will be distributed to all high schools in the Durham and Scar- borough area. "As there are limits to the numbers we can han- dle in a one day camp, players should get their applications in as early as possible' said Aru. Players wanting further details can contact the Hawkeyes by phoning (416) 571-0530 or by writing to the Hawkeyes at Box 842, Oshawa Ontario.
