New programs added, others expanded . Hectic future forecast for Central Seven It's been a hectic year for the Central Seven Association for the Men- tally Handicapped and president Chuck Preston doesn't expect many changes in pace for 1985. At the organization's annual meeting in the Scugog Township council chambers Wednesday night, Mr. Preston outlin- ed the accomplishments of Central Seven for the past year as well as com- mittments for the future. "From what we've seen,' he said, address- ing a full house, "this year isn't going to be any easier for the board or the staff." Programs of all types within the organization were expanded in 1984 and new projects were added. Last year, for ex- ample, the summer recreation program (which offered trips, swimming, horseback riding, flying and other recreational activities) was onlytwo months long. This year the Cen- tral Seven board of direc- tors is adding four months to the program, which has proved to be a favourite among clients who are served by the organization. Commuitity Living Skills are an important part of the Central Seven mandate, helping clients acquire the necessary basic social skills to in- tegrate with the com- munity. Thanks to fun- ding by Canada Man- power, three full-time professionals were hired for a six month period, and the program is run- ning like a well-oiled machine. 'We want to ensure these people will be well looked after." According to his preliminary information, at least nine handicap- ped men and women would require life skills training in order to make a smooth transition from the security of an institu- tion to the sometimes confusing "real world." Central Seven is also getting involved with the Sunnydale Tri-Ministry project, designed to help the severely handicap- ped (both mental and physical) people of Sun- nydale Nursing Home in Sunderland integrate as well as they possibly can into the community. Program director Art Mathews spoke briefly at the Central Seven annual meeting about Sun- - nydale and what can be done for the people who live there. Every aspect of the project stresses théindividual, and takes into account each per- son's goals, strengths, and successes. "The whole concept revolves around the in- dividual,"" Mr. Mathews said, "not mass produc- tion." "There are those who say, 'well, they get government grant ' and that's true. We do get grants," he sai .. "But it's not enough." Already he has several fundraising projects planned including dances, a gala auction sale and an Oktoberfest celebration. "Hopefully, Central Seven will be more visi- ble this year," he added.
