Still time to grow whiskers Okay men, here's your chance to grow that beard that you have always had a secret desire to have, but never had the nerve to start. The Western Days committee of the Scugog Chamber of Commerce is sponSor- ing a Beard Growing Contest that will commence on Thursday, April 11, 1985 and judged during Western Days on J uly 12, 1985. There will be four categories in which to enter, 1. Longest; 2. Bushiest: 3. Most Distinguished and 4. Duffers prize for the worst beard. The Western Days Beard Growing Contest will get underway at a special "Shave-Off"' at the Municipal Office coun- cil chamber on April 11 commencing at 7:30 p.m. An added attraction for the evening will be Mayor Jerry* Taylor shaving Howard Hall, who has not been seen without his beard since he grew it in the 1971 Port Perry Centennial Beard Grow- ing Contest. During Centennial Beard Growing contest at least 23 men entered with John Thomson of Greenbank winning the Longest prize; Stan Glass for the Bushiest; Bud Sonley for the Most Distinguished and Carl Prentice was the Duffer. Anyone wishing to enter may come to the '"Shave-Off" clean shaven that night, or the Chamber's resident barber will take care of you that evening. Showboat paddles down old man river into Town "*'Showboat", a musical production with words by Oscar Ham- merstein 2nd, and music by Jerome Kern, is pad- dlin' into Port Perry to entertain us land-locked folk from April 14 through April 28. First conceived by the novelist Edna Ferber, the story dramatizes the entertainers' lives on their floating theatre - a typical showboat that plied the waters of the Mississippi in the late 1800s and early 1900's. In a paddle-length, the story is about the young musical daughter (Catherine Millar) of the amiable showboat cap- tain (Hugh Baird) and his crusty wife (Roberta Baird) who falls in love with a handsome, dashing river boat No grease Do not put grease of any kind on a burn, say St. John Ambulance first aid experts. Cool it. Cool water reduces the heat which eases pain and prevents further damage. If a burn is serious, get medical help immediately. To sign up for a first aid course call the St. John Ambulance number in your local phone book. Basket, gambler (Vic Agnew). Of course, troubles do en- sue but love triumphs in the end. Set in Mississippi in the late 1800's, the musical capitalizes on the historic singing abilities - of the showboat's black crew. And Joe, the patriarch of the stevedores (Ken Jackson), does not disap- point with his stirring rendition of that all-time favourite, "Ole Man River." Under the musical direction of the in- imitabl. Tom Millar, the artistic direction of Niane Lackie and David Sims, choreography of Pat Smith and set-design by Mike Lodge, this show is simply a knock-out. Show time is 8:00 p.m. at the Town Hall for the April 24,25,26,27 perfor- mances. Tickets $7.50 each. The Sunday matinee on April 28 starts at 2:00 p.m. and costs $5.00. Tickets are available from Irwin Smith 985-2635 or any Scugog Choral Society member. Leslie Parks wins award Artist Leslie A.
