a A es TT NE 8-- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, March S, 1985 CHS sets goal in the Jump Rope for Heart by Christina McLean On February 2ist the CHS Senior Boys' Basketball team defeated Harwood 85-56. Congratulations to 'the guys who placed 2nd at the COSSA champion- ships on Friday! Unfor- tunately Brock defeated Cartwright, 55-37. Our school congratulates our team who played an ex- ceptional season. Another thank you is ex- tended to Mr. Fletcher for his hard effort and fine coaching. Way to go, guys!! This year our Winter Carnival King is Mike McDiarmid. Allen Hud- son and Bryon Read are our princes! Congratula- tions guys. Our carnival would have been perfect if it wasn't so WET! However, everyone managed successfully to get through the obstacle course, piggy-back rides, the life saver challenge, and the tug-of-war! The AliKats and Tigers tied for 1st place, while the Ookpiks placed 2nd. For the snow sculptures (creativity) the Tigers came in 1st with their im- aginative coffin, the AliKats were in 2nd place with their life-like clown and the Ookpiks came in 3rd with the amazing Pacman! A special thank you to all of our teachers who provid- ed the students with an 'outdoor barbecue' lunch! At the LOSSA Girls Curling Tournament, Cartwright placed 2nd, while Uxbridge came in 1st. Congratulations to Town buried in worst storm (From page 1) dent Ronn MacDonald said plows were able to clear the villages and hard-top roads during the morning, then they were taken off the roads until just after 2:30 P.M. He said this is normal practise to let the brunt of the storm and the high winds pass as plows just can't keep ahead of the WEDNESDAY IS CREPE DAY at EMIEL'S PLACE. Mr. MacDonald said he expected his crews would be busy until late Monday evening, and the main street in Port Perry would be thoroughly cleaned early Wednesday morning. A spokesman at Port Perry Hospital said Mon- day afternoon, there were no unusual weather-related cases in the emergency depart- ment to that point. for business «x% NNN NE NENT NT NENT NE NT NINN NNT NNN NS NNN NSN NNN NSN NNN NNN ~- (\/ HAUGEN'S CHICKEN BARBEQUE Opening For The Season HAUGEN'S CHICKEN L, BARBEQUE § - S Ye ) our girls! Another reminder to the students that our annual Mud-Cat will take place on Wed. March 13th. Joinupon a team now, so you won't miss out on the fun! YEARBOOKS! Yes, yearbook money is due now, so get it in before the week is over. Our 'Jump Rope For Heart' event takes place on March 29th. Students will be receiving sponsor sheets and we need your help to make this event successful. Last year Cartwright raised $2000 and we would like to reach that goal again. Please remember to con- tribute to this worthy cause, © My husband and I have always sat back and watched other people dancing at parties, wed-: dings and whatever else people dance at. We even convinced ourselves for the longest time that that was what we liked the most, watching and observing when once in a while we decid- ed to give it a whirl as they say, we would go to our usual spot on the floor, smack dab in the middle, where nobody could observe us. We even had our own little dance routine that we used faithfully for everything, the old slide - one-two-slide-one-two, you know the one. We would pick a spot on the floor 2 feet square that gave the least resistance and did our own thing and would be as happy as a bump on a log. Never would we dance with anybody else of course, for fear of injuries beyond our control. Well, that all changed one day when as usual I got the bright idea that we would take danc- ing lessons. So off we went every Wednesday like clock work. After all, we were going to be the next Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire. Our first lesson or two or three, consisted of learn- ing to let the man lead, a very difficult manoeuvre to do after 25 years of doing just the opposite. He would tenderly yank me around until I thought my shoulders would fall off, when finally I got it. ' Now, we were learning one of the most beautiful steps in dancing, the Waltz, or at least it is, if we don't do it. I found out not long after we started that I don't know my right foot from TELLING IT LIKE IT IS? by Bev Silverman my left and my Donnie affectionately known in dancing circles as Wooden Legs can't bend his knees below his elbows. How about Rock and Roll, we gotta be able to do that one, after all, wasn't that what we were doing when we were younger and more flexible. Well folks we messed that one up too, they must have done it different back then. A few lessons down the long, long road of dancing and we are into lear- ning the Fox Trot. Par for the course, we ruin- ed that one too, although I've got to admit we did look like two foxes trotting. By this time we are beginning to think that maybe we should go back to our old stand by, if we can remember it, and do something less com- plicated. No, we are gluttins for punishment, we've got to learn the Cha Cha Cha. It's really easy to do if you have hips, I lost mine somewhere a few years ago and as for Don, forget it, we found out his are permanently locked. All that is left now is the Tango, almost had that one until Don dropped me on the floor. You need strength for this dance. By this time I am the only woman in all of Port Perry who has callouses on her two nails and stumps for feet. To top it all off, that little Donnie of mine has been wearing steel toed-shoes through all of this ego deflating experience. Well I asked for it. It was my idea after all. So now on to big- ger and better things, right? I just hope I can handle it. Dancing was not our cup of coffee!
