18 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, March 5, 1985 Sports Bantams knot series with 4-2 0.T. victory There was plenty of hard hitting and knock-em down action when the Port Perry Bantams (dark sweaters) tangled with Ernestown Sunday evening at the Scugog Arena. Overtime was needed fo settle the affair with On Friday it was off to Stouffville for the Pearce Auctioneers final play-off game. This game was a defensive struggle with most of the play in Port's end. It was Mike Pashley who kept Stouffville off the scoreboard in one of his finest games of the year. He faced many shots as Port had quite a job clearing it out of their own end. The fans from both teams were amazed at the outstanding goaltending abilities of this fine young goalie. Port Perry opened up the scoring late in the 1st period on a lovely back- hand shot by Kenton LeFort assisted by cen- treman Ritchie Tripp. With Stouffville failing to penetrate Port's goal they pulled their net- minder in an attempt to tie the score but with 28 seconds left Sandy Mark put the insurance goal in the empty net ending the game with Port winning 20. The close of this game saw Port, Stouffville and Pickering all tied for 1st place but play-off rules state that if there is a tie the 2 winners will be chosen by total goals. This let Port out by 2 goals and Stouffville and Pickering continue on. Every boy should be pro- ud of their efforts throughout the season, they all played their very I don't think any of us who followed the team throughout the beginning of the season would have ever believed a team could improve the way these boys have. Under the watchful eyes of the fine coaching staff of Bob Spencley, Ken Parry, Murray Empringham and Greg Heasman these Junior Rebels win LOSSA gold medal The Port Perry High School Junior boys basketball team fell vic- tim to the draw as it was knocked out of the COSSA championship Saturday in Belleville. In their first game, the Juniors came up against top-ranked Belleville Moira, the team which eventually captured the COSSA crown. Port managed to stay even with Belleville until the third quarter before falling behind on the scoreboard. Dave Burnett had an outstanding game for Port, leading all scorers with 20 points and pulling down many rebounds Jeff Ireland's aggressive leadership and 12 points also were a key part of the 'team's determined effort. Other point scorers for the Juniors were Craig Menzies with 11, Lee Wilbur with four, while Doug Arculus and Nick Vanderzwet had two each. The Juniors reached the COSSA final with a gold medal in LOSSA play on Feb. 25 in Ux- bridge and they edged out Anderson Collegiate with a basket in the dy- ing seconds. The loss to Belleville marked the end of a suc- cessful season for the Juniors from PPHS under the direction of coach Paul Arculus. The team put together 16 wins with nine defeats, and Dave Burnett pro- vided the scoring punch through this 25 game schedule. boys have moved up from hockey players to a hockey team. That win evened the series at one game each with game three slated for the Scugog Arena this Saturday night at 7:30. On Sunday the team was put through their practice drills by N.H.L. goaltender Marv Ed- wards. This was a real treat for the boys who got a chance to show off many different hockey techniques that they've The PPHS Junior Boys basketball team has concluded a successful season winning the LOSSA gold medals. The team ran up against some tough competition at the COSSA final held Saturday in Belleville and went down to defeat (see story). But over the season, the Juniors won 16 and lost nine, and that was more than satisfactory for coach Port's Goreski Bantam A's started the quarter finals against Ernestown on Saturday, March 2nd and came out on the los- ing end of a 4-3 game. Port took the lead late in the first period on a goal by Greg Stapleton assisted by Phil McBride. Port went 2 up in the second period when Jamie Menzies fired home a pass from Mark Barkey and An- drew Steele. Ernestown came back with three quick goals, one scored while short handed to end the period at 3-2. Mike Sorley tied the game with Phil McBride drawing the assist. With only 4:50 left in the game Ernestown scored and held on to end the. game at 4-3. On Sunday Ernestown came to Port Perry hop- ing to go two games up but the Goreski boys would not hear of it and took the game into over- time to win 4-2. With end to end action the first period was scoreless. Ernestown scored late in the second period but Port came been taught throughout the yéar. On Wednesday the boys are back at it again as they continue prepar--- ing for a tournament in Plattsville on March-13 and for our own tourna- ment here in Port on Fri-. Paul Arculus (back left). Port took over the scoring with 3 goals while allowing Ernestown only one. Mark Barkey passed back to Steven Connors on defence and Steve got off a screened slap shot into the top right corner. Jamie, Menzies got his second goal of the night on a pass out of the cor- ner by Mark Barkev. Ernestown potted "one with 1:14 left to play, score 3-2 for Port. Ernestown then pulled their goalie and Port's Jeff Oke ended the scor- ing into an empty net. Final score 4-2 for Port Perry.
