Atoms tie twice and post 7-3 win On Friday Feb. 1, 1985 the Malmont Farm Atoms travelled to Cobourg to play in their first of twelve round robin playoff games. This game saw lots of ex- citing end to end action and proved that both clubs were very well matched as they ended in a 2-2 tie. The first period saw both clubs playing very defensive and as a result no goals were scored. In the second period Brad Moase finally got the Green Machine on the scoreboard with assists going to Jason Cochrane and Chad Gar- vock. At 4:56 Jason Cochrane scored the se- cond Malmont goal with the assist going to his brother Gavin Cochrane. In the third period the Green Machine skated strong and looked like they had a victory but a questionable penalty by - the referee in the dying minutes took away our chances of victory and the boys had to settle for a tie. On Sunday Feb. 3 the Malmont Farm Atoms travelled to Uxbridge for game number 3 of the playoff round this time A) iA finally coming away with a solid 7-3 victory. In the first period. Jeff Parry . scored with the assist go- ing to Jody Logan. In the second period the Green Machine got rolling as Jeff Parry scored his se- cond goal on an unassisted effort. At the 2:12 mark Jason Cochrane scored with the assist going to Mike Sluggett. In the third period 'Brad Moase scored with the assist going to Jason Cochrane and Chad Gar- vock: At the 12:57 mark Jason Cochrane scored his second of the day with the assist going to Gavin Cochrane. At 9:08 Steve Laird scored on a real fine unassisted ef- fort. With only 3 seconds left in the game, Gavin Cochrane scored the final goal with the assist going to Jeff Andrews. The Green Machine played extremely well in all three games and it ap- pears as though all the practices are now paying off. Good luck for the rest of the play off games. German grabbed a loose puck and raced in alone on Clay Lovering. Just four minutes later, Brian Nicholson knotted the score at two each when Johnston and Rob Nicholson combined with short passes deep in the Bowmanville zone and Brian finished off the play with a quick shot from about 15 feet out. Early in the second, Eagles Scott Heard gave his team a two goal bulge as he scored at 1:36 on a break down the left side and repeated at 8:20 off a two on one with Lover- ing having little chance. Midway through the period, MoJacks enjoyed a man advantage on several occasions. Despite some strong pressure, they failed to cash in the power plays. But at 17:56 while killing a penalty, Scott Wallace cut the lead to 4-3 on a nice individual effort as he broke in from the blue line and beat Geprge Kennett with a good shot. The third period was just 56 seconds old when John Young restored the Eagles two goal lead as he took a centering pass in front of Lovering and fired the puck into the corner of the net. Again, the MoJacks were forced to play catch-up hockey and Brian Nicholson made it 5-4 at 2:08 with assists to _ Johnstone and Rob Nicholson. Brian proved he can also fire the puck off the back-hand as he beat Kennett with a nif- ty shot to the stick-side corner. Just past the mid point in the period, Paul But- terworth scored on a _ heads-up play as he chas- ed a loose puck into the Eagle zone. Kennett fail- ed to clear the puck and Butterworth scooped it to his right and calmly fired it into an open net. That tied the score at 5-5, but the Eagles took advantage of one of the few MoJack defensive lapses at 11:48 when Dar- cy Huber was allowed to weave in front of Lover- ing and he fired a back- hand shot to score what proved to be the game winner. Bob Marquis pulled Lovering for an extra at- tacker with about 40 seconds left and the Mo- Jacks came close to get- ting the equalizer off a wild scramble with the clock ticking away. February 12, 1985 -- 23 Eagles hand MoJacks 6-5 loss in game one The MoJacks played an intelligent game mov- 4 ing the puck cleanly out of their own zone and staying away from the silly penalties. They showed poise on several occasions by turning away from fairly blatant attempts by the Eagles to sucker them into penalties. Keeping their cool will be a key factor for the MoJacks in this series. During the regular season, Eagles won two of the four meetings by one-sided scores, but in the other two encounters, they had to come from behind in the third period to salvage ties with the MoJacks. The MoJacks are go- ing to have their work cut out for them as Eagles finished on top of the regular season stan- dings with 43 points and breezed through the quarter final series with Uxbridge four games to zero. In other Junior C semi final action, the Port Hope Panthers and Lakefield Chiefs are tied at one game each. Game two in the Port Perry-Bowmanville series goes this Saturday night (Feb. 16) at the Scugog Arena with face off set for 8:30 P.M. The teams go back to Bowmanville on Sunday night for a 7:30 start. Port Novice hot as playoffs start Tuesday night marked the beginning of what we hope to be a very ex- citing play-off season. Our first match-up was against the Pickering Panthers. Port Perry opened up the scoring on a beautiful goal by wingman Dave Bourgeois who scored from a well executed pass by centreman Scott Heasman. Still ahead in the se- cond period Port's Ken- ton LeFort upped the score by one, from a scramble in front of the net with the assist being credited to defenceman Andrew Jones. With Port up 2, Picker- ing put in their 1st goal mid-way through the 3rd period. With 3 minutes left Brent Harper put in number 3 of the night with assists being credited to Brett Lawson and Kenton Lefort. Nice work Brent! With 2 minutes left in the game and Port playing short handed Pickering let one fly from the point to make the score 3-2. Then 16 seconds later they tied it up 3-3 on a hard shot from the face-off. Tom Durward played a very strong game on defence, clearing the puck out of our end, and not letting Pickering get too many shots on net. Once again Mike Pashley played an excellent game between the pipes, fouling up many Pickering rushes. Game Two Our 2nd play-off game saw the Pearce Auc- tioneers facing off against the Uxbridge team. The opening period ended with neither team scoring a goal but both had many excellent chances. Port opened up the scoring late in the 2nd period on a goal by Scott "CHEVY ASTRO MINI VAN Heasman as he received a great pass from the corner by Sandy Mark. Nice goal boys. The Auctioneers held on to their lead through the 3rd period with Port having a couple of great rushes one by Graham Holt who was up and down but got the shot away on net. The second rush saw Brent Harper lose the puck and get it back again in a valiant effort only to be cut down by the Uxbridge goalie. As thegamecametoa close, Scott Heasman put in his second of the night, assisted by Dave Bourgeois making it 2-0 for Port. Greg Thompson played an exceptional game on defence this week as did Brent Harper on offence. Keep up the hard work boys. On Sunday it was Ux- bridge's turn to host our Novice team. It was a very exciting game between 2 well matched teams. Both teams had many chances but the goaltenders from each team both played an exceptional game. Our Mike Pashley was hot, recording his second shut-out of the play-offs displaying an outstan- ding effort. Way to go Mikey! The defencive lines of Tom, Greg, Clay, An- drew, Gavin and Jay stood their ground stopp- ing many Uxbridge rushes. The game remained scoreless until early in "the 3rd period when the "Red Streaks carried the puck up the ice with Kenton LeFort scoring the lone goal of the game. This line of Brent Harper, Brett Lawson and Kenton LeFort skated hard and had- many good rushes throughout the game. On Friday Port Perry faces off against Picker- ing in their 2nd match-up of the play-offs. Good luck boys. You can do it. Petites blitz the Falls 5-1 On Sat. Feb. 9 the Bruton's [.D.A. Petites hosted Fenelon Falls in a league game and defeated them by a score of 5-1. Fenelon scored the first goal of the game before Port took control of the game with their ring handling and pass- ing and scored 4 goals in the first period. Scoring for Port were Kelly Menzies 2 goals; Misty Andrews 1 goal and Denna Lovering 1 goal assisted by Kim Finley. Lyndsay Dutkewich scored the on- ly goal of the second period.
