24 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, Feb. 5, 1985 \ Auctioneers lose a real heart-breaker 1-0 The Pearce Auc- tioneers hosted Uxbridge on Friday Feb. 1 for the final league game of the season. Port came out fired up and played a very strong first period. Approximately midway through the period, Port's Scott Heasman scored from a scramble in front of the Uxhridge goalie. Later in the period defenceman Jay King passed the puck to centre man Heasman who then broke away and scored his 2nd of the game. As the 2nd period began, the Uxbridge team picked up momen- tum and scored within seconds of the face-off. Midway through the period, Uxbridge scored again, tying up the game. Before the period Bantams to top rival Uxbridge On Monday Jan. 28th the Bantam A's started playoffs with a team ef- fort win 5-1 over Bowmanville at home. The first goal went to Warren Geer from a fine pass out of the corner by Brad Menzies. Goal two was scored by Andrew Steele assisted by Mike Sorley. Jeff Oke showed us that desire can pro- duce goals giving a pass from Warren Geer to Brad Menzies, who drove the puck home for goal number three - Jeff Oke scored the fourth goal assisted by Warren Geer. The prettiest goal was scored with a fast slap shot completely fool- - ing the goalie by Steve Connors, assist to Greg Stapleton. Bowmanville scored late in the second period spoiling Stacey's shut-out. ~ Game two played Jan. 30th in Uxbridge was a loosing cause, 6-2 for Ux- bridge. This game was for frame one of our best games. Port did a lot of running around and drew too many penalties. Full credit must be given to Uxbridge for the win. Port's only goal was from Brad Traves unassisted and Jamie Menzies assisted by Derek Fitzgerald. On Feb. 2nd Port Perry took revenge on Uxbridge. Port came out firing and skated away with a 3-0 win. All the goals were scored in the first two periods. Stacey Ballingall was between the pipes and earned a shut-out with the help of a strong game from the defense. Goals in the first period went to Greg Stapleton assisted by Jamie Menzies and Mark Barkey. Brad Menzies was awarded a penalty shot and promptly tuck- ed the puck in behind Ux- bridge's goalie. Goal three was scored in the second period "Philip- per' McBride assisted by Jamie Menzies and Greg Stapleton. ended, Port retaliated with a rush by the line of Kenton LeFort, Brent Harper and Brett Lawson. Kenton got a hard shot away which bounced back out; but " Brett was there to net the rebound, ending the period with Port up 3-2. The 3rd period saw both teams giving an all out effort providing the fans with lots of excite- meet Once again penalties were high with 24 minutes for Port and 26 minutes for Uxbridge. Port must cut down on the time in the "sinbin"' if they expect to advance past Uxbridge in playoffs. Game four played Feb. 3 in Bowmanville which Port Perry won handily 14 to 1. Although Bowmanville started the scoring they were never really in the game. 'Hat tricks went to No.9 Steve Connors and No.14 Warren Geer. Mike Sorley scored twice and singles went to "Philip- per' McBride, Shawn Nanay, Derek Fit- zgerald, Mark Barkey, Brad Traves and Andrew Steele. Almost every member of the team had assists as goals only come as a result of pass- ing the puck. The line of Sandy Mark, Dave Bourgeois and Scott Heasman made several good rushes but failed to score Late in the 3rd period, Uxbridge offense got a breakaway which Port's goalie Mike Pashley sav- ed; but Uxbridge scored with the loose puck, en- ding the game in a 3-3 tie. Bowmanville Tournament The following day the Novice 1 headed out to Bowmanville for a one day tournament. The teams first opponents were Port Hope when we last faced the Panthers we were soundly beat 6-2 but todays game proved to be a different story. Mens Compton T.V. - 3 Sportsland - 2 Sportsland jumped to a 1-0 lead in the first 22 seconds of the game on a goal by Ken Smart assisted by John Foster. Compton fought back, by the end of the second period to tie the score at 1-1, on a goal by Ed Olsen assisted by Doug Bron- son. Early in the third period Ed Olsen took a fine pass from Dennis Sims to give Compton a 2-1 lead. With 7 minutes left Dave Bourgeois scored Sportsland's se- cond goal to tie the game at 2, assisted by Wayne Norton. Compton were not to be denied a vic- tory, as Doug Bronson slapped in a rebound off the stick of Bill Hurst with just 3 minutes to play. Galley Fish & Chips - 5 Larocque Electric - 2 Larry Page of Galley notched 3 goals to lead his team past Larocque Electric. Galley's other goals by Brian Samis and Dave Mann. Assists to Randy MacCloud (2), Brian Samis, Dale Bron- son, Kelly Lee, Terry Rose and Carl Fit- zgerald. Larocque goals by Ken Little and Bill Van Camp. The remainder of the period saw Brett Lawson making it 2-0 for Port with assists being credited: to Kenton LeFort and Brent Harper. Mike Pashley made many remarkable stops helping to hold Port's lead. The 2nd period was scoreless with both teams having equal op- portunities. Midway through the 3rd period Port Hope put one in but. Scott Heasman quickly retaliated with a beautiful shot past the Port Hope goalie ending the game with Port win- ning 3-1. This win enabled our team to move up the championship ladder. The 2nd game saw Port pitted against Cobourg in a game which proved to be an outstanding match « from the drop of the opening puck. The teams were equal- ly matched with both teams giving an all out effort throughout the game. The defensive lines of Greg Thompson, Tom Durward, Clay Scott, Jay King, Gavin Carnegie and Andrew Jones allowed very few shots on Port's net. The game remained scoreless until 14 seconds left in the game when Cobourg slipped one heartbreaking goal past our net minder. It was too bad someone had to loose this game but each and every boy should be proud of the splendid effort and good sportsmanship that they showed throughout the tournament. ~ Tuesday begins our round-robin play-off schedule as we visit Pickering. Assists to Larry Jackson (2), Jim Duncan (2), Mike Fit- zgerald, Randy Prosser and Cris Brain. Pee Wee B'sina hot playoff series On Friday night the Pee Wee B's travelled to . Uxbridge in the first game of Round Robin play between Uxbridge, Fenelon Falls and Port Perry. The Uxbridge squad opened the scoring at 7:44 of the second period, Port rallied back with two quick goals from Brett Puckrin unassisted and Greg Fitzgerald from Adam Cummings. In the third Fitzgerald added his second of the game with Graham Sullivan assisting. Ux- bridge narrowed the gap with just 6 seconds in the game to give our boys 3-2 win. -- The second game of the play offs saw Fenelon Falls travel to Port Perry Sat. night for a fast and exciting game. The Fenelon Falls squad scored twice in the first period and once more in the second, Graham Sullivan from Brett Puckrin put our boys on the scoreboard to end the period 3-1 in favour of Fenelon Falls. In the third Fenelon Falls scored 3 more times, but our hard working boys never gave up and in the late stages of the period scored twice, Sullivan from Fritzgerald and Ennie, then Ennin getting assist from Cummings, ending the scoring for a 6-3 win for Fenelon Falls. David Buxcey played excellent goal in both games, stopping many shots. Puckrin, Sullivan, Mantel and Forder played a strong defen- sive game.
