Juniors win two, thenskatetoa tie with Markham On Wednesday, January 30, the Sport: sland Junior Ringette team travelled to Sunderland for a league game. The girls came away victorious with a 7-5 score. The details of the game are not available at this time but as I'm sure all the girls would agree that although they all played well, the less said about the ref's the better. On Saturday, February 2, they played a league game in Beaverton. This turned into another victory. Terry Childs played well in net and received a well deserved shut-out. Beaverton played a clean sportsmanlike game but were unable to stop us putting 8 goals between the pipes. Col- leen Yorke opened the scoring at 8:47 of the first period on a shot from Kim Loudfoot and Joanne Desautels. Tina Soomre then scored twice. Once from Joanne - Desautels and Anne Finch, and then went for it again to get another unassisted. This put us in a 3-0 lead in the second period. Denise Tompkins scored from Jessica Fluke at 14:01. Kim Loudfoot then found the mark on a pass from Val White. Kim then assisted Anne Finch on her goal to make the score 6-0. Jessica then got her chance on blue stick and put two goals in with assists by Tina, Kim and Val. Vicki Reid played a strong game on the for- ward line to help the team to a 8-0 win. On Sunday the team hosted Markham in a well played, evenly mat- 1 ched exhibition game which ended in a 5-5 tie. Port Perry opened the scoring on a goal by Kim with Joanne assisting. Colleen Yorke soon put us ahead 2-0 with assists by Denise and:Joanne. Markham scored 3 goals to go ahead 3-2 by the end of the first period. Heide ~ Meisner tied it up from Anne and Vicki. Colleen put us in the lead once more with help from Joanne and Tina. Markham again tied it up. With 51 seconds left in the game it looked like we had won it when Heidi again scored, this time from Jessica and Val. But Markham came back 19 seconds later to score the final and tying goal. Terry again pro- tected our goal and made some super saves. Port was one of the smallest of the 16 towns entered, and did very well, winning the Con- solation Championship. Their first game was played in an arena, while the following four were on an outdoor rink, which proved to be a different challenge. Our first game was on Friday night, against a team from Nepean, and we won by a score of 7-2. Scoring for Port was Kel- ly Calloway with 3 goals, 1 assist; Jenny Blan- chard 2 goals; Michelle Beare 1 goal, 1 assist; Rachel Traynor 2 assists while Lisa Levy scored 1 goal. Our next game was on Saturday morning against Blackburn, with Port winning by a score of 7-2 again. Jenny Blan- chard scored 3 goals, 1 assist; Lisa Levy 2 goals; Nicole Slack 2 assists; Kelly Calloway and Melissa Moehring each with 1 goal while Heather Lawrence and Michelle Beare each picked up 1 assist. Saturday night we played a team from Beaconsfield, winning by a score of 9-1. Hazel Beare got 2 goals, 3 assists; Lisa Levy 3 goals, 1 assist; Kim Cau- dle and Rachel Traynor each scured one, while Nicole Slack, Melissa Moehring, Kelly Calloway, Jennifer Pelow and Cj Harris each receivéd 1 assists. This win gave us first place in our division, put- ting us in the semi-finals against Pierefords. This game was played on Sun- day morning and proved to be our only loss of the tournament. It just seemed as if luck was against us, as the ice sur- face was very rough, and we got some bad WEDDING INVITATIONS And Accessories PORT PERRY STAR 235 Queen Street Port Perry 985-7383 breaks, including Kelly Calloway's 2 shots off the post in the final minutes of the game. We only lost by a score of 4-2 and this team werit on to win the championship. Kerri Allen shone in net, stopping at least 6 breakaways, and without her efforts, the score would have been much higher. Jenny Blanchard scored both goals, assisted by Nicole Slack and Cindy Harris. It was a super effort girls! This put us into the Consolation Champion- ship against Cumberland, and all of the girls really deserved the 7-5 win. Kerri Allen had another super game, keeping us ahead when weran into penalty trou- ble late in the game. The defence who 'played excellent all weekend, really worked in this game, breaking up Cumberland's plays again and again. Lisa Levy received her se- cond hat trick of the tour- nament, Jenny Blan- assists; Rachel Traynor 1 goal, while Heather Lawrence and Kim Cau- dle each received 1 assist. This was a super way to end a super weekend. Congratulations to the girls, and coaches, and thank-you to the loyal fans who braved the cold, in their ski suits, and fur coats. We'll just have to wait before we beat Markham! chard got 2 goals; Kelly Calloway, 1 goal, 2 assists; Michelle Beare 2 MoJacks one up (From page 20) Jack lead was cut to 54. The Merchants press- ed hard in the last five minutes and yanked Stewart for an extra at- tacker with 45 seconds left, but Lovering stood his ground to preserve the victory. In all, he fac- ed 41 shots and Stewart handled 29 in this game. THURSDAY'S GAME In a word, the Mo- 'Jacks looked awful in this one. It was one of those games where nothing went right and the Merchants took full advantage of the MoJack woes. They out-shot Port Perry 23 to two in the first period and then dominated on the score- board in the second to build an 8-2 lead after 40 minutes. The MoJacks manag- ed to find a little life in the third and banged in two quick goals by Brian Nicholson and Paul But- - terworth, but it was far too late. The third period was marred by several skir- mishes and a number of players on each side were sent to the showers. For the Merchants, captain Glenn Miller was the trigger man as he clicked for three goals. For the MoJacks, it was just one of those games. But the two weekend victories more than made up for the tough game on Thursday, as far as the MoJacks are - concerned. Captain Scott Wa.'ace returned to uniform ai 'er suffering a bruised shoulder and he was very effective in the checking department. His two goals Sunday night sparked the team to vic- tory. Vaughan McKee also saw action Sunday night for the first time in several games missed due to a shoulder injury, and while his ice time was limited ice time, he 'turned in a robust perfor- nance. Brian Stevenson saw limited ice time, but he created some good MODULAR4 SERVICING PHILIPS chances by parking his big frame right on Stewart's door step dur- ing the power plays. The MoJack victory Sunday night was the first for a team on home ice during this series and was also the first game Brian Nicholson failed to get a goal. He merely had three assists. In other playoff series, the Lakefield Chiefs knocked out Lindsay four games to one, and the Bowmanville Eagles swept by the Bruins of - Uxbridge four to zero. Port Hope and Cobourg are involved in a tooth and nail battle with the Panthers leading that series three games to two. Game six in the MoJack-Merchant series goes this Wed. night (Feb. 6) in Little Britain at 8:00 P.M. and game seven (if necessary) is Thursday night in Port Perry at 8:30. The win- ner of this series will meet the Bowmanville Eagles. wu ALL TYPES - ALL MAKES STEREOS &HI-FI'S THIS COUPON WORTH $5.00 OFF YOUR NEXT SERVICE CALL 723-5341 214BLOORSJ.E.
