2 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tues. Janvary 22, 1985 The Port Perry Snowarama for Easter Seals is set for February 3, and at a publicity night in Oshawa last week, Cora Maleshewski, 11, was introduced, along with Roger Abbott of Canadian Armed Farce fame. Cora is "Tammy" in this area this year, one of 6800 physically handicapped youngsters in Ontario who benefit from the Easter Seal Society. And that's what Snowarama is all about, as net proceeds from this popular event are turned over to the crippled kids. The target for the Port Perry Snowarama has been set at $30,000 this year. (See story) : (From page 1) Dave Ballingall of Port Perry who has worked on the trail preparation for all the Snowaramas in this area, said pledge sheets are now avail- able from the Port Perry and Dynos Snow- mobile Clubs and at area snowmobile - deal- ers. } The ride is open to anyone, and trail per- mits will not be required on that day. Registration wiil take place at the Latcham Centre (on the Port Perry waterfront) between 7 and 10 A.M. on February 3, and while fuel will be avail-. able on the course, riders are asked to start out with a full tank. This year's Tammy for Easter Seals in the Durham area is 11 year old Cora Malishewski of Oshawa. She's an active grade six student who enjoys all--kinds of outdoor activities and sports, music, choir, computers and fishing. She has achieved 12 badges in her guide - group. . Cora spoke briefly at the publicity event last week, and her message on behalf of all crippled children in Ontario drove home the real 'reason for Snowarama. 'We have the same goals and dreams as other children. We want to be successful, we want to be loved. All we need is a little more help than; the other child ren," she said. Snowarama has be- come the major "special event!' fund raiser for Easter Seals in Ontario, and out of every dollar turned over 70 cents goes directly to helping these children. So, if you own a as many snowmobile (or you can ren. or borrow one for the day) make plans to take part in the 1985 Port Perry spowarama on February 3. Pickupa' pledge sheet and line up sponsors as you can. Youngsters like Cora all over Ont- ario are counting on the efforts. , Cora will be at the Latcham Centre on Feb- Weather's great ruary 3, and she has been promised a ride on a snowmobile. Riders are reminded that pledge sheets should be filled out completely with al) necessary * information before registration on February 3. If weather conditions force cancellation of the event February 3, it will be re-scheduled for Feb- ruary 10. Region continues Prince Albert talks Durham Region coun- cil has agreed to continue negotiations with three developers who are try- ing to build new homes in Prince Albert. At the regular meeting in Whitby, January 16, council agreed with a re- quest from Ron Arm- strong, that the matter be referred back to plan- ning staff for more discussion and negotia- tion. Mr. Armstrong represents the three developers who have two projects on the south- west corner of King and Simcoe Streets and one on the east side of Union Avenue. A total of 39 lots for single family residences have been approved. LS However, the projects have been held up by a lack of water services. The Region estimates it will cost $101,000 to upgrade the water ser- vices for the projects and wants the developers to put the money "up front" before construction gets underway. Mr. Armstrong told the council this "would be risky for my clients," who fear that if one or all of the developments did not proceed for any reason, the Region could cash the letter of credit for upgrading the services. He said his clients are not opposed to paying for upgrading the services, "but the scheduling of the payment is not acceptable. Scugog Mayor Jerry Taylor supported the re- quest for more negotia- tions saying "ar- rangements should be worked out that will pro- tect both the Region and the developers. I think that between the plann- ing staff and the developers, this can be done." The Durham council planning committee had recommended that the three housing projects be denied because of the im- passe over how the upgrading of services would be paid. Durham has no plans: itself to upgrade water services in Prince Albert in the near future. this coupon.
