Back row from Strong effort by the Port Midgets The Port Perry Eagles had little trouble advancing to the finals of the Midget tourna- ment held December 27-28 at the Scugog Arena as they pounded Orono 10-4 and hit double figures in a 10-2 victory over Ennis- more. But the championship game with Stouffville was anything but a cake-walk as the Eagles scored three un-answer- ed goals in the final period to take a hard- fought 5-2 win and the gold medals. It was the first time this season, the Eagles had defeated this Stouff- ville team, and they picked a great day to come up with the victory. Brad Menzies, up from the Bantams for this game, opened the scoring at 3:54 when he pounced on a loose puck and lifted back-hand over a sprawled Stouff- ville netminder. Greg Warriner drew an assist on the play and the Eagles led 1-0. That was all the scoring in the opening period which featured a lot of tight checking and some rugged hitting by players on both sides. Neither team had a great number of good scoring chances. Captain Craig Menzies gave his team a two-goal bulge at 2:22 of the second when he took a pass from Dave Bur- nett and drilled a shot from the left side that seemed to deflect off a Stouffville defense- man's stick. Jeff Christensen of Stouffville took advant- age of some sloppy work by the Eagles as he scampered in on Bill Eade and beat him with a wrist shot to the top corner. That goal came as the Eagles had a man advantage. Early in the second period, Stouffville again surprised the Eagles with a short-handed goal as Sean McQuigge rifled a long shot from just inside the blue line. That made it 2-2 at the end of the two, and the game was up for grabs as the teams opened the third period. But Stouffville ran into some penalty trouble early in the period and the Eagles went to work at 2:26 with a two man advant- age. In what was probably the nicest looking goal of the game, Lee Wilbur snared the puck at the Stouffville line, fed a pass to Burnett at the left side of the crease, who in turn feathered the puck across the crease where Dave Culbert was waiting all by himself to tap it home. The Eagles got an insurance marker at the 3:29 mark when Andy Sytsma cruised in from his point position and a different story as the Eagles had to fight for every inch of a 5-2 win over a tough Stouffville squad. And it was Sytsma who put the game on ice for the Eagles in the final minute after Stouffville yanked their net-minder for an extra forward. Steve Durham story) The outcome of the Bantam final was never in doubt as Port Perry jumped all over the left: Ken Goreski, team sponsor, Clark Menzies, coach, Stan Feasby, assistant coach, Mark Barkey, Phil McBride, Steve Connors, Andrew Steele, Brad Menzies, Warren Geer, Dereck Fitzgerald, Jamie Menzies, Lorne Traves, manager. managed to get a loose puck deep to the Stouff- ville zone and Sytsma raced in to tap the puck across the line and make the final score 5-2. Dereck Fitzgerald opened the scoring at 1:08 when he found the range from the side of the net with Brad Traves and Jeff Oke drawing the assists. Even though Port Perry owned a wide margin of the play in the first period, the team was unable to take advantage of scoring chances. Chris Mec- Connell in the Port Perry net didn't face a shot until late in the period when he was forced to come up with several stops in a row. The second period was just 34 seconds old when Brad Menzies flipped home a back- hand shot to make it 2-0. Mark Barkey and Greg Stapleton helped out on that one. Just -over a minute later, Port Perry took advantage of a power play as Brad Traves found the range with a low shot from the left point, with Brad Menzies and Steve Connors getting the assists. Connors soon made it 4-0 a couple of minutes later as he drilled a rising slap shot from 30 feet out that beat every- one cleanly, including the Peterborough net- minder who didn't even have a chance to wave at it. Connors was set up by Mark Barkey. Warren Geer got his team's fifth goal just past the mid-point of the period, and with the game out of reach, both teams started to rough things up, with players throwing their weight around. Shawn Nanay and Brad Traves both proved effective in the hitting department with some solid body checks. But Port Perry wasn't finished on the score sheet either as Brad Menzies and Warren Geer went to work at the 23 second mark of the final frame. Menzies finished off a nifty passing play from Geer to make it 6-0. McConnell saw his shut-out evaporate late in the period when Peterborough's Mark Lathange scored on a power play off a shot that just found its way past the right post. Jeff Oke finished the scoring with 25 seconds left as he was set up nicely by Brad Menzies. Menzies was top scorer in the game with a pair of goals and three assists, and his efforts earned him MVP honours in the champ- ionship. The Bantams reached the finals with a 3-0 victory over Brace- bridge as Jeff Oke clicked for a pair and Greg Stapleton chipped in with a single. And the team has its hands full against Cob- ourg as a goal late in the second period by Staple- ton stood up to give the Bantams a 1-0 victory. Barkey drew the assis| on that one. The Port Perry Eagles came up with a tough performance to defeat Stouffville 5-2 and cap- ture the gold medals in the Midget tournament held in Port Perry last week.
