December 24, 1984 Forty-eight curlers gather for Ladies Jitney Blackstock Area News by Joyce Kelly - A hearty welcome to Henry and Tracy Dunn who have just returned from their honeymoon in Jamaica, following their marriage on Saturday. They are living in Dave and Ingrid Larmer's former house on Church Street. On Tuesday, forty- eight enthusiastic curlers gathered at the arena for the Annual Ladies' Christmas Jitney. Along with two games of curl- ing, the ladies enjoyed a potluck dinner. When the final rock had been thrown the team of Elaine Bailey, Jackie Beddome, Beth Schryburt and Rossie Hassall emerged vic- torious. Following close- ly behind was Kathy McLaughlin and her crew of Joanne Russell, Yvonne Burnett and Evelyn Trapp. Third prize was awarded to Ruby Van Camp, Elizabeth Luke, Jean Go- ble and Norma Jean Newbold. Special thanks was extended to Lynda Maw who organized the spiel and kept it running smoothly all day. This week was busy at the Public School with the students decking the halls with Yuletide carols. On Tuesday, the BD DURHAM Primary Christmas Con- cert was met with ap- proval from a crowd of enthusiastic parents and friends. The program opened with the Kindergarten classes of Mrs. Green and Mrs. Ox- ley with their rendition of "Jingle Bell Dance' followed by the Grade Seven Band playing "Jingle Jolly Christmas" and "Up On The Housetop." '* Twas the Night Before Christmas at Cartwright School" was next on the agenda hy Mrs. Thompson and Mrs. Hanson's Grade One classes. Mrs. Argue and Miss Morton led the Grade Three's in "Twelve Days of Christmas with the Care Bears." Lisa Duchemin entertained all with a clarinet solo of 'Deck the Halls." After the Grade Two singing of 'Up On The Housetop," Sheryl Gibson and Jennifer Gawley performed "We Three Kings" as a clarinet duet. Karen Doyle and Joan Gibson followed with a wood- wind duet of 'God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen." Clarinet duet of 'Jingle Bells" by Connie Denault and Lisa Duchemin was very en- joyable. The Primary THE REGIONAL MUNICIPALITY OF DURHAM Choir led by Miss Morton and Mrs. Swain conclud- ed the evening with their renditions of "Happy Happy Christmas Day," "All 1 Want for Christmas Is My Two Front Teeth' and "I Don't Want a Lot for. Christmas." On Wednesday night another good crowd "gathered in the gym- nasium for the Junior/Intermediate Concert which was co- mastered by Jason Par- son and Scott Sutton. The program began with a play entitled 'Christmas Touch' by Mr. Challice's Grade Four class. Following Jeff Bed- dome's trumpet solo of "Blue Christmas," Mrs. Hockley"s class of Grade Four entertained all with a reading of "When Jesus Was A Little Boy" and the singing of 'Away In A Manger." 'Jingle Bell Rock" was perform- ed by Cindy Leach on the flute. 'Old Toy Trains," "On This Day Earth Shall Ring" and "Calyp- so Carol' were sung ex- cellently by Mrs. Jef- frey's Junior Choir. After Kris Bayley's flute solo of "Let It Snow" Grade Five recorder group performed "Good King Wencelas," "Santa Claus is Coming to Town," '"'Silent Night" and "Jingle Bells." Frances Grove and Vicki Schryburt sang a beautiful duet of "Silver Bells." For a little varie- ty in the evening, Mrs. Rink led the Grade Sixes in two French songs. The evening was con- cluded by the In- termediate Choir singing "Christ is Born This Day,". "Let There Be Peace on Earth," "The Little Sheep | of Bethlehem" and 'Winter Wonderland." A good crowd attended the Blackstock United Church Candlelight Ser- vice on Thursday. After enjoying the musical prelude by various young artists on the piano and recorder, the Junior Class presented The Night Before Jesus dur- ing which the congrega- tion sang "People of God,"' "Silent Night,' "Tell Me The Stories of Jesus' "and "Kum Ba Yah." The Primary classes delighted their parents with an Advent Pro- clamation and Mary Had A Baby, led by Ruby Van Camp. Two plays were performed by the In- termediat class firstly- 'No Reservations' with cast of Esther Kelly, Kevin Gibson, Julie Byers, Cindy Leach and Chris McConnell and secondly- Christmastime with our Person on the Street" with Chris Chorostecki, Vicki Schryburt, Lori Swain, Sheryl Gibson and Jen- nifer Fletcher. After the program, candles were placed in the Yule Log by the adults followed by "Silent Night."' Social time over Christmas goodies ended a most en- joyable evening. Because this 'Is the Season to be Jolly" and everyone is busy, it would be greatly ap- preciated if you could phone in your Christmas news as soon after Christmas as possible. Coincidence or just good planning? That was the question when Gayle Stapley (left) had her ticket drawn in the Matthew Geer fundraising Twinkle draw. Nancy Prentice and Kathy Stapley organized the draw, and more than a few eyebrows were raised when Kathy's mother Gayle won the prize, a Twinke doll made by Nancy (who is shown Greenbank UCW luncheon A delicious pot-luck luncheon attended by more than thirty U.C.W. members and friends preceded the December meeting of Greenbank United Church Women. Pianist Betty McGee, played Christmas music at intervals throughout the afternoon meeting and provided accom- paniment for the singing of several carols. The well-loved, age- old Christmas story was told in a different way as the December group of Ellie Speck, Marie Cookman, Pat Spencer, Isabel Raines and Betty Stone played the parts of Mary, the Innkeeper, a shepherd, a wiseman and a story teller of each recalling by poetry song or, scripture, his or her part played on that first Christmas night. Following the worship meeting, several con- tests and games were enjoyed, also a solo '""'White Christmas" sung by Ellie Speck. President, Mary Jean Till, then chaired the business meeting, which sbegan with the instal- lation of officers for 1985. The new executive list reads as follows: M.J.
