Frank's Restaurant Durham Regional Police force has begun its holiday crackdown on impaired drivers in the Port Perry and Scugog Township area. Drinking and driving . has surfaced as a major social concern, especial- ly during Christmastime when motorists are more likely to over-indulge in alcohol. Always on the lookout for drunken drivers with roadside checks and special rover squads, the force is now stepping up these operations. Roadside screening, using the Alcohol Level Evaluation Roadside Tester (ALERT), will be used frequently and drivers suspected of hav- ing had just a few drinks will be issued 12-hour license suspensions. A first-time impaired driver can face a fine of up to $2,000 and a prison term of six months, although the actual penalty is usually less severe. A second conviction for driving with a blood alcohol level .08 per cent can carry a one-year sentence, while a third- maximum three-year prison term. Durham Regional Police charged nearly 1,500 people with im- paired driving in 1983. A report, compiled by the Canada Safety Coun- cil, indicates that alcohol plays a part in 45 per cent of all driver deaths. Council recommenda- tions to help ensure a safer holiday season in- clude: if you've been drinking, don't drive -- call a cab, call a friend, take a bus, or stay over- night; if you see an im- paired driver, get the license number and vehi- cle description, then notify police; and try to stay off the roads during those hours when motorists are more like- ly to have been drinking, specifically between 10 p.m. and 3 a.m., Thurs- day to Saturday. No GO from Port - Oshawa There will be no GO transit bus service bet- ween Port Perry and Oshawa for the next few years. In a recent letter, pro- vincial transportation minister James Snow in- formed Scugog Township council that '"'at this time, demand does not warrant GO bus service from Port Perry." The letter goes on to say that forecasting will continue to be up-dated, especially when the GO Rail Service is extended from Pickering to Oshawa. This is expected in the next -couple of years. At this time, Port Perry will be given full consideration for the im- plementation of GO bus service, according to Mr. Snow's letter.
