22 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tues. December 11, 1984 Sports : by John B. McClelland It was about this time last year when the league-leading Port Perry MoJacks went into a tail-spin from - which they never really recovered. The story for the team is a different one this season as the MoJacks got off to a poor start and found themselves in the cellar of the Junior C loop. But the MoJacks look Mo Jack forward Brad Flaxman didn't waste this scoring opportunity as he put the puck past Lakefield goalie Terry Eggleton in first period Junior C action at the Scugog Arena Sunday night. Flaxman's goal cut the Chief lead to 2-1 and the MoJacks fought back to take Utica drops first of season Netminder sparkles in 4-3 win over the Chiefs like they are starting to turn things around and have chalked up three straight wins, including a pair of weekend vic- tories over the Lindsay Muskies and the tough Lakefield Chiefs. MoJacks went into the Lindsay Arena Friday evening and handed the Muskies a 7-6 defeat. In front of the home town crowd Sunday evening at the Scugog Arena, MoJacks got a nifty goal-tending perform- ance from Clay Lover- ing as they downed the Chiefs 4-3. High Scoring Brian Nicholson led the team with a hat trick against the Muskies with Paul Butterworth chipping in with a pair and singles coming from Rob Nicholson and Jeff Johnstone. John Vaz had a productive night on the scoresheet with four assists. story) The game was not as close as the score might suggest and the Mo- Jacks were holding a comfortable 7-4 lead with less than a minute to play when the Musk- ies scored twice while short-handed. Sunday night against the Chiefs, Port Perry battled back from an early 2-0 deficit in the first period behind some outstanding work by netminder Clay Lover- a oe Bs ha 11 17] RH ing. It looked like Lover- ing and the MoJacks might be in for a long evening as the Chiefs scored quickly at the 43 second mark when Brad McFadden caught the corner from a very sharp angle. Chiefs made it 2-0 at 12:54 when McFadden sliped out from behind the MoJack net on a power play and again caught the corner with a 5 Q@ a 4-3 victory. It was the third in a row for the MoJacks who look like they are starting to turn things around. The team also clipped Lindsay 7-6 on Friday night. Goreski's again took the lead as Bruce Woodrow and Tim Ashbridge connected. Emmerson's again came back as Charlie Dennis assisted on Les Allen's goal with both teams playing a man short. Black- stock built up a 3-0 lead by the end of the first as Dave Dalton started it off knocking in Rick Alpe's rebound. Ron Redman then assisted Wayne McGuigan in building up the 2-0 lead. On the ensuing face-off at centre Beacocks stormed down ice where Tom Wotten put in Laval Poulin's rebound. With 5:39 to play Rick McLean's shut-out bid was spoiled when Scott Dezan's shot bounced off the board to the front of the net where Kevin Ibbittson put it in the top corner. Oddfellows - 0 Brian's - 0 With the single point in the tie, and Beacock's win coypled together, Oddfellows have now slipped back into fourth place to start off the second half of the season. They had their chances to win this one" as they had a total of 2 power plays in which Bill Bridge and Dan McKee had a couple of good chances each only to be thwarted by Brian's goalie Ken St. Amant. Brian's also had power play chances too, especially with 24 seconds to go when Oddfellow's goalie, Casey Van Shagen was sent to the box for a 10 minute misconduct, but could do nothing with the advantage. shot along the ice. But less than a minute later, Brad Flaxman broke the ice for the MoJacks from a perfect spot just off the goal crease. Jeff McColl drilled a low shot from the point and Flaxman flipped home the re- bound. The Chiefs out-shot the MoJacks 14-10 in the first period and Lover- ing continued to per- form well early in the second period when he made several tough stops including a clear cut breakaway. The teams were play- ing five aside at 7:58 when Paul Butterworth pounced on a loose puck in front of Chief goalie Terry Eggleton to put the MoJacks into a tie for the first time in the match. Three minutes later as the MoJacks were playing a man short, Jeff Johnstone knocked down a pass at his own blue line and Brian Nicholson grabbed the loose puck, out-raced a Chief defender and beat cleanly with a wrist shot. Early in the third period, Lovering again was severely tested by the Chiefs but he held .a8 ground and kept the MoJacks in the game. The eventual winning goal for the MoJacks came at 10:53 when Jeff game in MolJacks run streak to three games Butterworth did some fancy stick-handling to work himself into the clear and he made no mistake with a rising wrist shot. The Chiefs had the better of the play for parts of the game, out-shooting MoJacks 36-23, but Port Perry took full advantage of the scoring chances. It was a hard-hitting game, chippy at times in the third period and there was one scuffle at the Port Perry player's bench. The two weekend victories give the Mo- Jacks a record of six wins, one tie and nine defeats so far and the team has vacated the basement in the Central Junior C loop.
