As well as the regular members of the Scugog Social Planning Council, 10 organizat- "ions of N. Durham sent representatives to learn about the United Way, its organization and benefits. There are 41 organizatins in Ontario and 99 across Canada. The one in S. Durham includes Whitby, Oshawa and Newcastle. So many pros and cons were discussed that everyone felt that more time was needed to decide if we wished this organization for N. Dur- ham. Folders were dis- tributed for study and the same groups will meet at the some place again in Jan. Dec. 2 was the first Sunday of Advent and was observed in the Island United by light- ing the first candle to represent 'Hope.' The children's. story _developed from the use of a cane to the shaping of a shepherd's staff and its use. The Sunday School numbers are continuing to increase and they will present their Christmas Concert this coming Sun. Dec. 9 - 1:30 to 3 p.m. There will be a dress rehearsal the pre- vious day Sat. 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. On Sunday evening Dec. 2 the Scugog Choirs and friends of approx. 25 members along with the orchestra presented their usual outstanding Christmas concert with costumes and all Scugog area certainly has its share of talents. The participants enjoyed it so much that the same helpers return year after year. Individual particpation was pre- sented by Archie Walker, Lodi Raffin and Bev. Thomson, Nick Henshaw, Norm Watson, Kristy Richard- son and Karen Wilson, Reta Brown, Betty Reader, Dorothy Mand- erson, John Beckett and Doreen Adam, Mrs. Norm Watson and Rev. Brian Robinson. Orchestra members were Alex Ingram, George Freeman, Edna Beckett, Bonnie Bell and Linda Sutherland with Ethel Freeman as musical director. Tuesday Dec. 11 - 7 p.m. Stewards from Manchester and Scugog meet at the Island United. Thursday Dec. 13 - 7:30 p.m. Elders meet in basement of the Island United. Sunday Dec. 16 - "White Gift Service' at morning service. Wed. Dec. 12-1 p.m. - "Friendship" UCW Pot luck luncheon - "Cookie Swap" - Hostess Joyce Fuller. We are sorry to say Alva Thompson has not --Obituary---- Effel Leona Forder Effel Leona (Brad- burn) Forder of Black- stock Ontario entered into rest at Community Memorial Hospital, Port Perry on Monday, November 5th, 1984 in her 89th year. Born in Cartwright Township, Effel was the daughter of the late Wesley and Edith Brad- burn. She resided in the Blackstock area all her life. On March 5, 1919, she married William Forder and they celebrated their 65th wedding anni- versary on March 5th, 1984. Left to mourn her passing is her husband William, daughter Joyce and brother Earl Bradburn, all of Black- stock. She was pre- deceased by brothers Fred, Roy and Ray Bradburn. Mrs. Forder was a devoted wife, mother and homemaker, and was a member of St. Johns Anglican Church. The funeral service was conducted from McDermott-Panabaker Chapel by Rev. Ansley Tuck ~t 1:30 p.m. November 8th, with in- terment at St. Johns Cemetery, Blackstock. Pallbearers were Maurice Bradburn, Ivan Bradburn, Ronald Bradburn, Donald Brad- burn, Lloyd Wright and Harold Forder. had much chance to enjoy her new home in Apple Valley as she has been quite ill with pneumonia but is now > dA recovering.
