November 20, 1984 Bantam B's wear tournament gold Early Saturday morn- ing Sportsland Bantam Bs took to the ice in the annual Little Britain tournament. The only words for this young team that come to mind are FANTASTIC, - they played the entire three games as a team, they went out to play hockey and were not in- timidated into needless penalties. Ricky King in net has to be commend- ed for his brilliant perfor- mance, especially in the third game when he fac- ed so many blistering shots. Sportsland met up with Little Britain in the first game, playing to a 5 all tie. As no overtime oc- curred in the first round, the team scoring the first Midgets take Ajax goal of the game moved to the Championship side. After four minutes of play, Gibson unassisted scored on a 2 on 1 breakaway, only one minute later Feasby con- trolling the play behind the net fed a pass to Leatherdale parked in front. The Championship Game aganst LeFroy proved a thriller plus a few grey hairs for the coaches right down to the final whistle in overtime. Both teams played ex- cellent hockey and for Lefroy a tough one to lose. Sportsland held a 2-0 lead after two com- plete periods, both goals coming in the first period. At the 5:58 mark on a power play Bailey with a super wrist shot scored from linemates Gibson and Brown, 8 seconds later on the same shift Gibson con- nected for goal number two from Bailey and Wylie: The second period although scoreless was a goalies dual as they warded off many ex- cellent scoring opportunities. Sportsland content to sit with this two goal lead soon found themselves in a 2 all tie as LeFroy retaliated with two quick goals, forcing a 5 minute sudden death overtime period. At the 3:06 Mark Feasby controlling the play behind the net was rewarded an assist on the winning goal by Lally. An estatic Sportland team skated the ice with The Championship Trophy which had been accepted by Captain Blair Bailey. Friday night on home ice, the Sportsland Ban- tam Bs met The Bowmanville Bantam two team for the second encounter of the season. After dropping a 3-2 loss previously, Port put their talents together display- ing excellent passing, backchecking and forechecking, all resulting in a 6-1 victory. Continual end to end play made for a fast first period with only one goal finding the target, a power play goal by Blair Bailey, unassisted as he jammed one between the goalies pads. Each team connected for one in the second, it took Sport- sland only 6 seconds on a power play to take a 2-1 lead, Lally to Leather- dale back to Wylie on the point across to Toye who let fly a shot across the goal mouth where Lally found the open side of the net. Port completely dominated the final fif- teen minutes of play as Bowmanville being frustrated by our of the game with five minutes remaining from Toye and Feasby. The 6th and final resulted from a beautiful passing play from defenseman Jamieson to Matt Durward. Friday night on home ice the Sportsland Ban- tam B's dropped a 9-2 loss to Markham. Despite this loss Sports- land played well con- sidering the opposition is ranked a superior club. Markham held a 3-0 lead when Kevin Gibson lit up the score- board after picking up a rebound shot from Robbie Brown, Blair Bailey also drew an assist. Markham in- creased their lead to 5-1 before a breakaway by John Lally after inter- cepting a pass resulted in a short handed goal with 5:58 remaining in the period. The opposit- ion maintaining control of the final 15 minutes of play added four more goals despite a brilliant performance by goalie Ricky King. On Saturday the Sportsland Bantam B's battled to a 6-6 tie against Ajax. Port jumped into an early 2-0 lead as Daryl Leather- dale notched the first marker after taking a pass from John Lally in Close ane On Saturday, the Sportsland Junior Ringette team played Mariposa to a 6-8 final score. Although Port Perry was on the losing end, it was a close game Kim Loudfoot opened the scoring early in the first period on a pass from Tina Soomre. Mariposa tied it up later in the period, but Heide Meisner quickly put us ahead again with assists by Joanne Desautels and Colleen Yorke. Going into the second period on a 2-2 tie, Mariposa began to take the lead.
