In the morning, Lynne Westaway gave a dem- onstration on the valu- able use of sheep dogs in confined spaces. Dan Stevenson was present to answer questions on ROP and the Red Meat Plan. Throughout the day an active buy-sale swap was in progress which also led to many conversations among new and old sheep breeders. Shortly after dinner, the annual meeting was conducted whereby the 1985 Board of Directors were elected and the 1984 Financial report was discussed. Keith Davidson of Uxbridge was elected chairman and Sandy Churchill of Blackstock was re- " appointed - Secretary- Treasurer. Teacher workshops offer wide range of subjects The Ontario Secon- dary School Teachers Federation (OSSTF), District 17 will hold pro- fessional development workshops for secon- dary school teachers, Wednesday, November 14. The more than 50 workshops will deal with both subject areas and areas of general interest. The former will be given princi- pally by subject area consultants from the Durham Board of Edu- cation. (Consultants are tea- chers with expertise in a particular subject area who provide advice to their fellow teachers). Some of the workshops have been organized by the various subject councils of secondary school teachers. The councils bring together teachers from the var- ious disciplines - math, English, history etc. ... in on-going professional - association. . The November 14 act- ivities are part of a board-wide professional development day invol- ving approximately 2,400 teachers in Dur- ham. Among the secondary : school teachers' activ- ities: Business teachers JEFF FLIELER 'We are all very proud of you! Mom, Aunt & Uncle Marge & Stewart Wiles Restaurant Queen Street Port Perry visit the Oshawa Rev- enue Building: English teachers dis- cuss "Independent Study and the Contract System"; Pickering Trustee Lorna Murphy tells tea- chers about an inno- vative new project - the Schoolhouse Playcare Centre - a daycare facility for the children of Durham Board of Education staff and students; a panel discusses French Immersion; Geography teachers tour the Ontario Agri- cultural Museum; Mathematics tea- chers look at Math Anxiety and Women in Mathematics; Science teachers assess the needs of basic and general level stu- dents. For teachers who wish to keep up with devel- opments in other areas, OSSTF has organized two general speakers. Bob Almack, the be- havior assessment tea-. cher from Harwood Secondary School in Ajax, will speak on "Winning with Kids Through Discipline." This involves organizing a "discipline plan" for "the classroom. 'District 17 has also invited Prof. Ben Schlesinger from the University of Toronto's faculty of social work to discuss "the Changing Canadian Family in the 80's and the Implication for Education." Because the Durham Board of Education - like other Ontario public boards - offers the widest possible range of programs for its stu- dents, the OSSTF events' are designed to serve the diverse needs of a wide range of teaching specialties. The theme of this year's board-wide PD day is "We Make Us Better" - the teachers' way of saying they know the importance of pro- fessional growth through the exchange of ideas among educators.
