After all, it is not every day that one gets a personal invitation to attend a Royal Picnic in honour of Queen Eliza- beth and Prince Philip. "I was very impress- ed with them. They looked beautiful and they were always smil- ing," Mrs. Warren told "the Star last week. On September 27, Mrs. Warren, her daughter Nancy Hanna of Oakwood and Thelma McCreight of Port Perry, Amherstview, near Kingston, to attend an agricultural picnic for the Queen and Prince at the home of Mr. Justice William Henderson on the shore of Lake Ont- ario. The picnic was hosted by the provincial min- istry of agriculture, and there were plenty of politicians, including Premier William Davis, in attendance. But the real thrill for Mrs. Warren was the chance to see Queen Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh. It was the first time she had ever seen the Royal Couple in person. Mrs. Warren was seated beneath a Fed- erated Womens travelled to Institute sign when Prince Philip walked by. He noticed the sign and asked her if she is a member. When she replied yes and showed him her Womens Inst- itute lapel pin, he smiled and reached out to touch it, much to Mrs. Warren's delight. She is a past president of the South Ontario Federated Womens Institutes and the current president of the Honeydale W.I. in Port Perry. She has belonged to Honeydale since it was founded 49 years ago. Since the Womens Institutes are affiliated with the provincial agriculture ministry, Mrs. Warren suspects that this was the reason she received the invit- ation to attend the picnic. In any event, her personal invitation arrived by mail early last spring. The picnic had been scheduled for July 17, but was post- poned to September when the Royal Visit was put off due to the summer election campaign. "I was really flabber- gasted to get the invit- ation. It was such an honour for me,' she said. Mrs. Warren, a widow with 15 grandchildren, is very active in comm- unity organizations in Port Perry. Along with her work with the Womens Institute, she is a member of the Legion Auxiliary and has not missed a meeting in 25 years. And she is also president of the Senior Citizens Club. And she says she will always remember see- ing the Queen and Prince Philip, and the fact the Prince stopped for a brief moment to chat. Members of Canoe the Nonquon organizing committee plan to ask Township council for assistance to help cover additional costs. Canoe the Nonquon, which started in the late 1960's as a 20 mile race along the Nonquon River and Lake Scugog, has become a popular early summer event in the community, draw- ing canoeists from the Township and other areas. The 1984 event generated about $2500 for the operation of the Scugog Shores Museum. In a letter to the Historical Society, Township administrator Earl Cuddie said it was regrettable that the hall had been rented You bet it's a small world Small world, eh? Just ask Tom Mullen how small it is and he'll tell you. The Royal Bank Manager and his wife were vacationing in Scotland and England recently, when, because of his allegiance to Rotary International, Mr. Mullen met up with a fellow who was born right here in Port Perry. Rotary members are required to attend a meeting each week, no matter where it hap- pens to be. And it just so happened that Mr. Mullen attended a Rotary meeting in Edinburgh. . '"'After the meeting I met a chap who tap- ped me on the shoulder and asked me if I was from Port Perry, Ontario." Mr. Mullen recalls. The "chap' turned out to be Gordon A. Sims, born above a service station in downtown Port Perry, sometime during the 1920's. His parents moved when he was still a little gaffer and eventually, the service station became a liquor store -- and then the Royal Bank. So as it works out, Gordon A. Sims was born above what now is known as Hank's Bakery. Mr. Sims had been back to Port Perry at least once, but he's still anxious to hear from anybody who might remember him or his fami- ly. Interested folks can drop him a line to 15 Telford Rd., Edinburgh, Scotland. Tom Mullen will be among those sending Mr. Sims a letter, including an expression of his thanks. | While the Mullens were in the area, Mr. Sims took them under his wing, touring them around and showing them a fine time. Says Tom, '"He's just a great guy!"
