Shhhh... Stella Dennis and Elsa Bongard of the Eastern Star Blue Ray Chapter turn over donation of $1700 to Community Hospital ad- ministrator David Brown. The funds have been used to furnish the new "quiet room" at the hospital. Mrs. Bongard is Immediate Past Matron and Mrs. Dennis is fund raising convenor for this project. Addiction Awareness Week through Durham by Dr. Brian McLatchie October 21st to October 28th, 1984 has been of- ficially named Addiction Awareness Week in Durham Region. The municipalities of Ajax, Newcastle, Oshawa, Pickering, Scugog, Ux- bridge and Whitby will be offering a series of special programmes during this week-long event. The Addiction Awareness Week con- cept was developed by The Alcohol Recovery Homes Association of Ontario. The idea is now spreading rapidly throughout the province. The purpose of the week is to increase public awareness about the nature and extend of addictions through provi- sion of information on ex- isting resources for education, prevention, treatment and recovery. Over the past few months volunteers from churches, industries, ser- vice clubs, social service churches, industries, service clubs, social service agencies and the medical profession have been working hard on a variety of methods aim- ed at raising public consciousness to this serious problem. It is hoped that the ac- tivities during Addiction Awareness Week will help make people more aware of: 1. The nature of addiction and the extent of the problem. 2. The available help in our Region. 3. The areas where fur- ther services are re- quired if the residents of Durham Region are to have the assistance they might require. The wide range of ac- tivities have been planned throughout the Region for Addiction Awareness Week. They include: - educational displays in shopping malls - distribution of literature (0 major organizations and industries -sermons in area churches -media presentations -concerts -lessons and projects in schools of al-three school Boards. " In addition to the above activities there will be a speaker's bureau available to the general public.
