eR A UL a he 26 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tues. October 16, 1984 The Victorian Order of Nurses, Durham Region Branch is holding the official Opening Cere- monies of their new main office at 292 King St. W., Oshawa on Monday, October 29, 1984 at 6:00 p.m. The Open House from 4:00 pm. to 8:00 p.m. will provide an oppor- tunity for the public to view the new facility and meet VON Board and Staff members' The VON also celebra- ting its 70th year of service in the Durham Region maintains the original philosophy that "the home is a good place to provide care because it allows people to be cared for in their familiar surroundings which are conducive to recovery and rehabili- tation." Last year, the VON Durham Region Branch provided a total of 40,598 nursing and related ser- vices throughout the communities of Pick- ering, Ajax, Whitby, Oshawa, Newcastle, Scugog, Uxbridge and Brock. While maintaining the model of the home visit, the VON also strives to Greenbank W.I. by Doris Hill The September meet- ing of the Greenbank Women's Institute was held at the home of Mrs. Muriel Gibson with Mrs. Pauldi Mairs and Pauldi Mairs and Muriel as the group in Deer hunter numbers up A total of 27,000 valid- ation tags - 7,880 more than last year -- were mailed to deer hunters across the province on August 28 for the 1984 hunting season. The validation tags are issued each year by the ministry to control the number of antlerless deer - females and fawns - taken during the season. The ministry allocates the tags on the basis of a random draw which was held this year on August 23. Alan Pope attributed the increase in Ontario's deer herd largely to the selective harvest system and mild winters. "In many wildlife management units, especially in north central and northwest- ern Ontario, all those who applied were grant- ed tags. Provincially, a hunter's chance of rec- eiving a tag in 1984 was better than one in three, which was similar to 1983," he said. In 1984, 59,922 hunters entered the draw, 10,973 more than last year's total of 48,949. More than 44,000 of the hunt- ers who applied this year specified a second choice of provincial Wildlife Management Unit. charge. Muriel opened the meeting with a poem "Happiness and Neigh- bours". Mrs. Speck gave an interesting commentary on Industry and its benefits to everyone. Mrs. Mairs read some poetry and spoke about how much it meant to her to have friendship and neigh- bours. Mrs. Helen McKean took charge of the meeting with a reading entitled "Harvest Time". She thanked Mrs. Gibson for opening her home for our meet- ing. The roll call was answered by naming a province and its industry. Mrs. Gibson told about a new method of tenderizing beef. Mrs. Holtby read an article about the abundance of Canadian apples. Mrs. Earle spoke about the Principle of Peace. Al the members present signed "The Goldbook"' and presented it to our Secretary Treasurer Mrs. A. McMillan on the occasion of the fiftieth Wedding Anniversary. The meeting closed with a delicious lunch. EASTER SEALS. To try and make the public aware of the professionalism involved in Public Works Activities. Winter maintenance is an operation unique to municipalities and can- not be measured by any yardstick.
