Heron The Brooklin Horti- culture Society of which there are several members including the President, live in Ash- burn, held a very successful plant auction on Wed. night of last week. Ken Brown was the auctioneer and his usual humorous running commentary made the evening an enjoyable one. There were house platns, herbs and perennials for sale and lots of people went home with several new plants to add to their collection and care for. The next meeting will be the fourth Wed. of October. Visitors and new members are always welcome. A date that several have been waiting for is, next Thursday evening, Oct. 4th when the euchre parties wil begin again at the Community Centre. Everyone is welcome and ladies are asked to provide lunch. At Burns Church last Sunday morning a quar- tette, Ronald and Flor- ence Ashton, Barbara Porter and Hugh knight sang a very nice anthem "My Faith has found a resting place'. The responsive psalm was read by Mary Brisco and Ross Batten read the scripture lessons. Rev. McEntyre's message was titled 'Keeping Our Ident- ity". Ted Stephens of Ottawa will be the guest Birdseye Center is a dream come true Zoe Allan by Janice Pashley Born in Port Loring, Ontario, population of only 300 people, Zoe relates well now with "Birdseye Center' -as she compares her own growing up in a small town as Jimmy Frise did in his legendary comic strip. When approached by Les Parkes last Fall, she was very unfamiliar with Frises' works, but wrote a script for "Reflections" a Town Hall Benefit. So together they developed an original musical play with 11 women, 8 men, 8 children and 1 moose. All spots are being filled ~ with old, new and young people from the surrounding area. Helping in editing and structuring of the play were Theresa Sears and David Switzer, Professional playwriters and Performers of Toronto. Their encouragement was invalu- Les Parkes by Janice Pashley Port Perry's well known and loved resident Leslie Parkes is finally seeing his eight year dream come true. Learning and loving Jimmy Frise, well-known comic strip 'Birdseye Center', he felt some thing should be done about it theatrically. He began creating his own clippings over the years but never really brought it to a head. Last year he was told that if three local community groups formed together to do "something for '"'The Bicentennial of Ontario", they would be eligible for a grant from the Provincial Ministry. He was asked 'How about Birdseye Center Les?" and that's all he needed. The Town Hall, Library and Borelians joined forces thus creating "Birdseye Center Committee". able!
