Port rallied with one run in the 8th inning, but that was to be all they could muster. Winning pitcher was Mark Goreski and los- ing pitcher was Lawrie Williams. On Sunday, Port Legion jumped to a 4-0 lead after 4 batters in the top of the first inning. They increased their lead with 2 runs in the 4th, 5 runs in the 5th and 3 runs in the 7th inning to easily win the game 14-0. A highlight of the game was the combined perfect game pitched by John Annis and Colin Wackett. John pitched 5 innings striking out 7 men while Colin pitched 4 innings striking out 5 batters. This was the 1st perfect game pitched by a Port team since Larry Elson did it as a midget in 1976. In game 2, Port again jumped to a quick lead by scoring 3 times in their first at bat. Oshawa's bats continu- ed to be quiet as they couldn't muster any kind of an attack. Port proceeded to score 3 more times in the 3rd and 7th inning to take the game 9-0. Legion hitting was supplied by Jay Will iams with 3 safeties; 2 hits each went to Colin Wackett and Rick Evans with singles going to Dave Dickson, Ken Bryant, Grant Jackson and Lawrie Williams. Lawrie Williams started the game for Port and went all the way pitching a nifty 4 hitter while striking out - 16 Juniors. Mark Goreski took the loss. If the series can't get started this week Port will have an exhib- ition game Wednesday night to stay sharp as they travel to Meaford on the weekend to par- ticipate in the O.A.S.A. Intermediate 'C' Championship Tourna- ment. Port starts Sat- urday morning against Garden River last years runners-up at 11:00 a.m. These two teams are the only holdovers from last years Tournament in which Port Legion placed third. Haugen-Greenbank series down to the wire The semi-final round between Greenbank and Prince Albert will go right down to the wire with the third and decid- ing game Monday night Sept. 17 in Greenbank Park. The opening game went to the Gamblers while the second game, after being rained out on both Tuesday and Thursday nights was finally played Sunday afternoon with Haugens picking up a tight 2-1 win. The weatherman would not co-operate last week and even after two rain outs the Sunday game had to be delayed for 30 minutes when a down pour halted play in the sixth inning. In the opener at Greenbank Park the Prince Albert team scored first on a home run by catcher Jack bright in the third inn- ing. However, the Gamblers tied the score in the bottom of the third when Neil Rodd lined a triple to left centre and scored on Steve Foster's single over second. The score remained tied until the bottom of the sixth inning when Don Beaton led off with a solid single. Ray Meisner came into run for Beaton and catcher Don Phinney scored Meisner with a triple to right center and then scored himself when the centre fielder threw wildly to third base. The Gamblers had seven hits off Ken Irvine while Haugens collected five hits off the offerings of Greenbank's Ken Goreski. Catcher Don Phinney led the Gambler attack with a 3 for 3 night at the plate with Don beaton adding a pair of safet- ies. The five Haugen hits were divided among Jack Bright, Ken Irvine, Jim McLeod, Scott Heard and Randy Mec- Leod. In the Sunday game each team collected three hits only and all the scoring came in the first inning. Neil Rodd led off the game with a long triple and Steve Foster beat out an infield hit with Neil Rodd holding third. Hugh Johnson scored Rodd with the first run of the game on a sacrifice fly to left field. In the bottom of the first inning Ken Goreski retired the first two batters and then Ken Irvine singled to centre field. On the next pitch Gambler catcher Don Phinney was struck on his middle finger by a Ken Goreski curve ball and had to leave the game with a dislocated finger. The next Prince Albert batter singled into left field to score the tying run and the third hit in a row for the Prince Albert team scored their second run. These three hits were all the Haugen team had in the game as Ken Goreski shut them down Stormers reach On Thursday, Sept- ember 13th, Port Perry Printing Stormers Ban- tam Girls Soccer team met the Oshawa Kicks in the semi-final of Durham Region. What a game. have never seen girls play soccer with so much enthusiasm and determination. Oshawa opened the scoring after 12 minutes of play and from then on both teams never let up. Leigh Ann Goreski scored for Port to tie the game at the 38 minute mark. Later in the game Leigh Ann was taken to Port Perry Hospital with con- cussion. (But is now at home feeling at lot better). With black rain clouds rolling in from the west the referee stopped the game because of dark- ness with only 10 min- utes remaining and the score tied at 1-1. Be- cause there had to be a winner in this semi-final game the remaining 10 minutes was scheduled to be played in Picker- ing Village at 9:30 Saturday morning. The girls arrived in Picker- after the first inning. However, the Gam- blers could not solve the offerings of Ken Irvine either and the game ended with a final score of 2-1. Ken Irvine, Jim Mec- Leod and Rick Camp- bell had the Haugen hits with Neil Rodd, Steve Foster and Dennis Romeril connecting for the Gamblers. In the other Semi-finai match up, Claremont Legion turned back Goodwood in two straight games by scores of 2-0 and 5-1. The survivor of the Monday night game in Greenbank will travel to Claremont on Tuesday night to start the best three out of five final series with Claremont Legion. finals ing with the same deter- mination as Thursday night and after only 55 seconds into the game Terri O'Neil scored to give Port the lead and the defence played super soccer to shut Oshawa out and put Port in the final. Only 4 hours later the girls were at it again against Pickering. After such a tough and long game with Oshawa and also injuries Port Perry girls had expelled all their energy going into this game and were beaten by Pickering 4-0. io PIT ROE NT Sl a a " stan rp tl i 0. i A RM nant i ie wT ERC ay SEAR AR REET
