Head lice infest many students at R.H. Cornish Public School Head lice Actual Size If parental reports are accurate, head lice are having a field day at R.H. Cornish Public School. Last week the Star ran a story saying there were "a few" cases of lice, reported in the school. That story prompted a flurry of complaints from mothers who claim - there are "more than & few, way more' cases than the Star had initi- ally thought. "We're not trying to create a stink at the school but it's worse than what the paper said," pointed out one mother, who declined to be named. 'We feel that there is enough of an infestation that it should be controlled'. The mother who spoke with the Star was one of three parents who con- ducted their own lice inspection in three Cornish classrooms more than a week ago. They approached school officials with their request after discover- ing their own children, and many of their child- ren"s friends, were infected. After inspecting Grade One, Grade Two and One and Two class- rooms, the parental inspection team discov- ered between one-third and one-quarter of the inspected students had lice. A Durham Health Head louse Magnified Unit nurse was on hand to confirm the parents' inspections. Although school and health officials are say- ing there's no cause for concern, the Durham Health Unit has releas- ed a fact sheet to the media, describing what should be done if lice is discovered. The following is the information on that sheet : Head lice is not a health hazard in Can- ada, it is a nusiance --- a very expensive nuis- ance. In order to control this problem the cooper- ation of all parents in the Region is required. Head lice are readily passed person to person, so are difficult to elim- inate. It has been found that the close contact of the home, or of a friend's home is a much more likely source of infestation than in the school setting. There- fore, regular inspection of each child (including preschoolers) by his own parent will result in the earliest possible detection and treat- ment. What to look for: the adult louse is a tiny insect (about one eighth of an inch long), cannot fly or jump, and clings to the hair shaft by means of 6 pairs of hooks. It punctures the scalp to obtain food, resulting in irritation and scratching which H&M WRIGHT FEED COMPANY * LAWN & GARDEN SUPPLIES * FERTILIZER & FENCING call ... ed oF HAROLD or MELANIE BLACKSTOCK - 986-4201 may, in turn cause secondary infection. The adult female head louse lays eggs (called nits) which are whitish, oval-shaped and tiny. These nits cling to the hair shaft but, although they may look like dandruff, they are not readily removed but cling tightly to the hair. They hatch in about a week, and an adult usually lives about a month. However, if con- ditions are not too harsh, the egg may not hatch for as long as 35 days. Procedure for Exam- ining and Treating Hair: Use a fine tooth comb; Comb the hair over a white paper or surface for easy detec- tion. (Have a good light, either by a window, or under a bright lamp); Treat only if necessary. Directions for the use of medicated shampoos should be followed care- fully. Do Not treat more often than recommend- ed; Every family member should be checked if one child has head lice; Nits may remain for some time in the hair, even after treatment shampoo has been properly applied and the eggs have been killed; Remove dead nits from hair with a fine tooth comb, (These shampoos should not be used to prevent infesta- tions, but only to cure them. Other Precautions: Some suggestions for control within the environment of each family when this infest- ation has occureed are as follows: Vacuum pillows and mattresses thoroughly. Vacuum all collars, hats, etc., which cannot be washed. Thoroughly wash all bedding and clothing which can be done safely. If infested, treat immediately. The use of combs and brushes should be limit- ed to family members. Ideally each member should have their own comb and brush. Do not share headgear. Frequent inspection of the hair is recommended as rein- festation can occur. Procedure used by School: Children suspected of having head lice will be excluded where the infestation is confirmed. A notice will accom- pany the excluded student that states the reason for exclusion and what must be done before the student is readmitted. On return to school the student will be required to bring a statement signed by the parents before he-she is readmitted stating: The student has been treated with a shampoo specific to the treatment of head lice; The name of the preparation used; That the instructions accompanying the pre- paration used, were followed carefully. At the student is excluded, the time the PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, Sept. 18, 1984 -- 17 DEEGAN Denture Therapy Clinic 305 QUEEN STREET - PORT PERRY -- OPEN -- BY APPOINTMENT ONLY! remaining students in the classroom will receive a notice stating that there are head lice in the classroom and requesting that parents inspect all family members, initiate treat- ment if necessary, and notify the school if treatment has been required.
