6 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, Sept. 11, 1984 letters Resident gets the election run-around (From page 5) redirected to the Village of Prince Albert. This proved to be another futile trip, and by now, after spending almost two hours (not to mention a considerable amount of gas) in follow- ing what seemed to be nothing more than of- ficial sounding guesswork, my ex- asperation was clearly evident. Some kindly old gentleman took pity and offered to call someone "who would know for certain." Lo and behold, it appeared that my rightful place of voting was way back in Blackstock - just minutes from where I had started out on this not so merry- go-round. "Realizing that time was running out, I hustl- ed (risking a speeding ticket) to the "Cart- wright Community Hall in Blackstock' where as luck would have it, the polls had just closed. Thus, my long awaited opportunity of exercising my franchise resulted in nothing but a pitiful exer- cise in frustration and futility. I can't help but wonder and be somewhat con- cerned about how many others were similarily in- convenienced and disen- franchised because of such careless and im- proper direction, both by the cards mailed and by well meaning but ob- viously confused election workers. Perhaps in the future, your paper could provide valuable assistance by publishing some sort of guide or map of the area polling stations and en- compassing voters. P.S.- Upon arriving Left off Dear Sir: It is 8 p.m., Sept. 4th, election night, and my husband and I have just left our polling station re- jected and disappointed in not being able to exer- cise our rights as Cana- dian citizens and taxpayers. Apparently, our names failed to appear on the voter's list, due we feel, to the incompetence of our area enumerator. This person claimed to have visited our proper- ty 4 times: twice in the home | discovered that my parents had also been directed to Utica, but did manage to cast their vote -- thanks to a more enlightened neighbour. Yours truly, Jason Cziranka R.R. 2, Port Perry the voters list morning, once in the afternoon and once in the evening. The fact that we both work would obviously rule out the first three; the one evening visit would hardly be adequate. On reading an article in this newspaper, I made a point of calling Port Hope to find the name and number of our enumerator, and then began calling several times to no avail. Finally, in her KAME KA FOOTWEAR INC. My husband made a special effort to leave his job in Ajax to come home to vote and had to return to work right after. 'At 7:50 p.m., the peo- ple at the polling station expected us to return with a neighbour who could vouch for our iden- tify and residence. In the seven years we have lived here, we have never been denied our vote, and have always made a point of exercis- ing this right. However, I can assure you, that after this charade, we won't bother in future to waste our time or energy.
